From watching your kids play in middle school or high school to watching college football or the National Football League (NFL) on TV. Around 220 million people tune in to watch their favorite college team during the year and 200 million watch the NFL. Aside from the popularity of watching football, it is also one of the most participated in sports with around “3 million youth, 1.1 million high school, and 80,000 college football players” (Concussion, 2016). Though football is very popular many people do not understand the underlying dangers and risks that can come to those who play the sport. Among team sports football currently has one of the highest rates of injury, not including collegiate or professional football around 70% of football players in the United States that are under the age of 14 can see up to 240 impacts to the head during a single season (Filley, 2015). Whereas with college and professional football players, it only seems to get worse with helmet sensors showing up to 1000 hits to the head during the span of one season. Many studies have shown that later in life football players have much more difficulty with executive functioning and are four times more likely of dying from a neurodegenerative disease (Seichepine, 2013). Why is this you may ask, many factors are pointing to concussions and mild traumatic brain injury …show more content…
Concussions are a crucial aspect of football, with approximately the US alone having 1.6-3.8 million concussions that are related to sports. Typically your brain is protected by cerebro-spinal fluid (CSF) that runs around it inside of the skull. Due to its gelatin like nature, a concussion is so violent that the CSF is unable to protect the brain from the impact made inside of your skull. There are many complications that come from concussions which include; headaches, epilepsy, and trouble thinking (Concussion). Many times after receiving a concussion the patient’s magnetic resonance images (MRI) and computed tomography images (CT) may look normal, though once a person has a concussion they are then 4 times more likely to get another and it takes less of a hit to the head to cause a concussion as well as increasing recovery time. This is due to the injured cells in the brain that are very vulnerable because they are not dead, but injured and healing from the first concussion. Many companies are investing to create better helmets and technology to help football players, but that initially does no good since a concussion comes from the brain
