At High School One (a pseudonym) a rural 2A high school in Central Washington State, all students will be equipped with their own, school provided Chromebook as part of the one-to-one implementation beginning with the 2016-17 school year. As part of this implementation process, teachers need to be aware of the potential online threats that these new devices present, which is the purpose of this presentation. While using electronic resources, such as Chromebooks and the internet, a few of the potential threats educators may face include: students accessing inappropriate websites, online predators and plagiarism.

To ensure effective use of computers and the internet, a proper technology and internet use policy is in place, and there will be effective enforcement of the policies. Many students will want to use the computers for games, taking selfies or sending messages to friends during class. In a classroom that does not have a well articulated and written policy signed by the students, the technology will likely not be used effectively for education. However, in a classroom that does have a well articulated and written policy signed by a student, when the undesired behaviors observed, the student will need to acknowledge that they knew the behavioral expectation, that they did not follow that expectation and they are aware of the behavioral intervention that will result. To make those situations in the policy even more clear to students, teachers can share scenarios and discuss the potential threats with students and parents. A scenarios that are easy to share include violation of plagiarism policies. Teachers can show students old examples of plagiarized essays and how easy it is to use an online program to find plagiarized essays.
