Christopher Reeve: A True Hero

Improved Essays
Christopher Reeve, Superman, once said “A hero is an ordinary individual who finds the strength to persevere and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles.” This shows that anyone who keeps going can be a hero, not just the people with the title and the cape. Reeve is saying that in order to be a hero all you have to do is persevere and endure overwhelming obstacles and do your best to reach the top. Reeve may have been a hero playing Superman in the movies, but in real life became a hero after falling from a horse and was left a quadriplegic. He never lost hope or inspiration in the face of such a terrible injury and remained a positive role model for others until his death. A hero is typically an ordinary person who fights for a worthwhile …show more content…
For example, in the poem Frederick Douglass by Robert Hayden “...this Negro beaten to his knees, exiled, visioning a world where none is lonely...this man shall be remembered...with the lives grown out of his life, the lives fleshing his dream…” (SB pg.70). this shows that even though he was discouraged and scorned time and time again, he never gave up, but kept coming back even stronger and more determined. Another example is ‘Tristin Eugene Segers, a 2002 graduate of Lake Stevens High School, was driving his armored patrol vehicle when a homemade bomb exploded in the road underneath Segers’ floorboard. ....Just below his knee, Segers right leg was gone. He had shrapnel sticking out of his eyeballs, face, and arms.’(SB pg.58). He is a hero because he was fighting for our country. Gale Fiege states that ‘Nothing is stopping him,’ which shows that he isn’t just giving up because he no longer has his leg but is fighting to regain control of his life and make it normal again. These men are heroic because they didn’t let anything get in the way of their futures. They didn’t stop and give up, but reassessed the situation and came up with a different solution …show more content…
A great example of mental fortitude is the The Drummer Boy of Shiloh, Joby. “...It was indeed a solemn night for a boy just turned fourteen... ‘Now, boy, you’re the heart of the army’...He gave the orders, but Joby set the pace!…” (SB pg.21). This shows that Joby couldn’t have been physically strong for he was just a boy, but he had to be brave because he had such an important task. It never tells us what side he’s fighting for but either way he was a hero because he was passionate about his cause, was resilient, and he led other men into a battle not a massacre. Another great example is our 32nd president, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, FDR. FDR had polio so he wasn’t physically strong, but he had a great attitude and lots of mental fortitude which enabled him to persevere and accomplish his goals. FDR said many inspiring things, but there are two really important things that showed his resolve: “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.” and “Don’t let our doubts of today limit our tomorrow”. Therefore these quotes are amazing because they show that since FDR wasn’t physically strong he made up for it with his mental fortitude; staying positive, encouraging others, and finding another solution. Both of these people are true heroes because they didn’t let their fear or their lack of size/strength intimidate them, but instead pushed it aside and went on to do great

Through his life, Christopher Reeve suffered greatly after a tragic accident and endured great struggle afterward. Much like Christopher Reeve along with his character of Superman, Roy Hobbs of The Natural demonstrated godlike strength and power as he is portrayed as a somewhat humanlike hero. I think he is correct; a hero doesn’t give up he keeps pushing through no matter what happens. A hero to me is someone who does not give up no matter what the situation may be. For example Abby Wambach, retired professional soccer player, in the middle of the a soccer game against Japan.…

The heroism he demonstrated during the battle at Princeton provided the extra push of confidence that the inexperienced soldiers needed. His act of bravery was so well remembered that many of them wrote back to their family members, saying things like, “When I saw him brave all the dangers of the field and his important life hanging as it were by a single hair with a thousand deaths flying around him. Believe me, I thought not of myself.” Washington made the soldiers believe in themselves and their found courage were what led the Americans to victory. Washington also possessed…

Words that David Livingstone lived by were “Nothing earthly will make me give up my work in despair.” A true hero is someone who does not give up easily. Another way to describe a hero would be that they stand up for what they believe in without harming others in the process.
