In the movie Dark knight directed by Christopher Nolan, it is evident that various techniques in the film add to batman being morally ambiguous while portrayed as a vigilante. Costume, design and lighting also contribute to the moral ambiguity as well as blurring the lines of a common stereotype to be real.
Christopher Nolan breaks the stereotype of a superhero in the way that batman’s costume is designed. Batman’s body suite is black which has an evil connotation. Whereas the conventional superhero’s costume would have blue and red in it, in search for justice. Batman’s costume also makes use of weapons, but instead of it healing people it has been designed to harm people. Contributing to a vigilantes own idea of justice.
The use of lighting also establishes batman being part of the ‘shadows’. Batman fights crime at night and in addition to this effect, Christopher Nolan makes use of low-key lighting, giving a more menacing and mysterious mood. The use of lighting also corroborates that Batman is kept a secret, therefore, should be kept in the dark. ‘Because he’s not our hero. He’s a silent guardian, a watchful protector…a dark knight’- Lt. James Gordon.

In the Christopher Nolan 2008 movie, The Dark Night, the audience and film analysis question if the character Batman is considered morally ambiguous. I believe he is morally ambiguous as his actions even out the scale of good and evil in the character. Tension is often within characters who are morally ambiguous as they question if their darker side will overcome the good and if it does, will this effect their quest for justice. These characters evoke sympathy in the audience as they deal with their problems that cause their inner conflict. Therefore being stuck between the scale of good and evil.…

For this assignment, we read and discussed four different stories including Stephen King’s, Why We Crave Horror Movies; Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan’s, Why Vampires Never Die; Jorge Luis Borges’, The Origins of Half-Human, Half-Animal Creatures; and Frank Miller’s, Batman: The Dark Knight Returns. While reviewing these stories it was apparent that there could be connections made between Batman: The Dark Knight Returns and the other three stories we read previously. It appears that Batman’s two personalities can possibly relate to a few key points in the other stories such as the horror aspect of the Batman comic, the rebirth of the Batman Legend, and many other connections. It was interesting to see how horror movies, vampires, and creatures…

Symbolism is another significant portion in Bruce Wayne’s life as Batman. Freud would say that not only were Bruce’s dreams forms of symbolism, but also, more significantly and recognizably, Batman’s Batsuit and name. As previously stated, Bruce came up with the batsuit when seeing a swarm of bats. He then decided on the name because he felt that villains would also fear bat, as they are a symbol of the night. Another form of analysis that Freud could make about Batman and his life is by using his idea of the doctrine of opposites.…
