In his book, Christopher McDougall explores how people get into ultra-running, the nutritional benefits of veganism, possible reasons why humans are thought to be designed for running, and most importantly; why barefoot and or minimalist running form is a far superior form then from conventional running shoes. Discovering the secrets of the Tarahumara Indians was not an easy feat for Christopher McDougall and just meeting them proved to be an unforgettable adventure. Getting to them was very difficult since they live in isolation from the world. Learning about them proves to be even more fascinating. One of their many traditions is to celebrate the night before race day with large amounts of alcohol and then the next day run fifty miles. Before I arrived at the Southwestern Oregon Community College campus on August 28, I vowed to myself that I would never run cross country for a school again because I never had the opportunity to practice on wooded trails, rather than concrete. But that changed one day, when I explored the campus and realized that there were wooded trails intertwining in every which way in the dark green forest lined with salmon berries and blackberry bushes that were surrounding the Upper Empire Lake. My dream has always been running in the forest, and afterwards swimming in a crystal clear, clean, deep, and refreshing lake after a long run. The Southwestern Oregon Community College Campus would provide superior running trails and a lake to swim in for my dream to come true. Only a few days later, after I explored the campus, I accidentally bumped into the cross country coach, Anthony Collins.…

Bruce Springsteen’s 1975 hit song, “Born to Run” is a hopeful anthem for any individual who has felt the desire to escape from the banality of day-to-day life. While the song features a love story between the narrator and a character named “Wendy”, the more overarching message is the longing to leave behind a town that holds few opportunities and take on the unknown in search of a more fulfilling future. In analyzing this song, three major themes can be identified. These can be simply summarized as escapism, love and internal turmoil. While all of these elements overlap and come together under the broad idea of young people wanting to get away from the unpleasant aspects of life, each individual component also speaks to Springsteen’s…
