Growing up as a kid Christopher McCandless had to deal with his cookie cutter family, and how his parents wanted people to see them. In Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer, we see Christopher as he was in different parts of his life. We see him being an outsider feeding the homeless, forcing his way out of an accelerated program and failing physics because of disobeying lab guidelines. He rejected a new car from his parents because he believed it wasn’t a gift that it was just them trying to fix the family image. A time for him to break the social norms that his parents would disapprove of. When he graduated, he left his parents grieving due to his planned disappearance. Another getaway that would fulfill his wants of living on his own. He gave his $25,000 life savings away to a charity and headed off on his adventure. When Chris was in Fairbanks, Alaska he picked up a ride and told the driver his name was Alex Supertramp and that he needed to go to Denali National Park. He then told the driver, an electrician named Jim Gallien, that he wanted to "walk deep into the bush and 'live off the land for a few months '" (15). At first Gallien thought McCandless was another crazy tourist but when they begin to talk more he changed his opinion and began to see him as intelligent and thoughtful. Gallien recognized that McCandless lacked the basic necessities for surviving in the Alaskan bush. All he had was a 10-pound bag of rice, hiking boots, and a rifle too small. They don’t stop to think about the reasoning behind the whole trip. McCandless was an adventurer, he got off on traveling to places and enjoying nature, where at home he was trapped being smothered with materialistic objects by his parents. Krakauer states multiple times how since McCandless was a kid he always loved going on family trips hiking, backpacking overnight, climbing mountains and spending time gallivanting through the nature. He was born to be in the wild. Although at the end of McCandless’ trip he became extremely ill he didn’t regret abandoning his life and coming to live in the wild. On August 18, 112 days after he began his way into the wild, his adventure went crashing. He showed no pity, he left a note explaining that his trip into the wild was no disappointment, “I HAVE HAD A HAPPY LIFE AND THANK THE LORD. GOODBYE AND MAY GOD BLESS ALL!” (219).
