When Columbus was a teenager he worked on a merchant ship. He remained at sea until 1470 when the french privateers attacked his ship it sailed to the north of the Portuguese coast and made his way to Lisbon on a scrap of wood, where he soon studied mathematics. Christopher Columbus started to soak up the high technology of his time, learning math, celestial navigation, shipbuilding, Latin…and map-making, the great enabling technology of the epoch which made him think that the earth was flat, so he wanted to find a direct water route west from Europe to Asia to trade for spices. Christopher, of course, wanted fame and fortune and he knew if King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella heard his plan they would let him sail to find it. Christopher then studied more about the earth and its dynamics.The end of the 15th century it was impossible to reach Asia from Europe buy land due to the route being too long and issues with hostile armies.
