Christopher Columbus Technology Essay

Christopher Columbus, an Italian explorer commanded three ships; the Santa Maria, the Pinta, and the Nina. Searching for a direct water route to china from Europe. However, the technology Columbus uses is not as advanced as it is now. Ship sailing, navigation, and calculations are more advanced. Therefore, technology is faster and more accurate now more than it was then.
Christopher Columbus ships are slow and made for carrying cargo. The ships use sails to guide their way. If it they ran on fuels and motors it would go much faster than it is now. Having an engine would also be more convenient than having anchors and sails. Also, propellers would really benefit the ships to make them go faster and maybe better at directing and guiding and maybe

Using a watch instead of a sandglass would be fitter so the time and days would be more accurate. A depth sounder would be good for Columbus to know how close he was getting to the shoreline. His use of dead reckoning navigation was actually kind of an accurate navigation system it showed him his location and the location he wanted to be at. Columbus uses a quadrant to find the North Star making sure the direction he is going is correct and using this his directions were pretty accurate to some degree. Also having an astrolabe to pinpoint the North star's exact location. The magnetic compass he uses is also known as the star that shows the way.
Columbus’s mathematical calculation are off too. He miscalculated the size of the earth to be one degree of latitude to equal 59.5 miles. He calculated Japan to be closer than it actually is, therefore going closer to Cape St. Vincent.Reduced the actual miles to 16,305 miles from 21,600 a 25 percent error. The distance Columbus calculated is 3,080 miles the actual distance is 7,313. His math being off everytime he uses the dead reckoning system it will put him off course about 22 degrees off of his location he wants to

Many think that some other person would find America if Columbus had not, but that is not necessarily true. Still, even if they had, they might not have written down what routes they had taken during their trip to America. Christopher Columbus was smart enough to realize that marking his path would help a lot of others find their way, even if he did not know that he was in America. According to John George Jones, “He stands out among the beacon lights of history as a man of vision dominated by a definite purpose.” This quote proves that Christopher Columbus is someone who stands out because he saw things at a different perspective.…

Calling his discovery of America accidental is quite nice considering the circumstances he was in. Even though he had planned and brought three ships of supplies and men to cover the distance he thought it would be to reach Asia from Europe, he was wrongly mistaken. It was proven that if America had not existed and been in the way of his journey, Columbus would’ve had to turn back long before reaching his goal of Asia, or he and every man on his ships would have died a quiet death. With that in mind, it is acceptable to say that Christopher Columbus was “lucky” to have encountered America. It goes to show that Columbus may have rushed the voyage and did not fully plan out the proper resources needed for a successful trip.…
