Meriwether Lewis and William Clark are very well-known for for their cross-country journey, where they met and traveled with Sacagawea, a native American woman from the Shoshone tribe. She acted as a translator and guide for the expedition. They made countless great discoveries, including many native tribes, not all of which were friendly. The group was composed of not just Lewis and Clark, but rather 31 members. Each member had their own unique specialty, such as woodworking or mapmaking, Lewis and Clark’s specialty being their leadership.…
In 1492, Columbus sailed the ocean blue. Christopher Columbus discovered the new world in his voyages, but by accident. The reason for Columbus’s voyage was to find an alternate trade route to the Spice Islands And at this time the passage required Spain to go through the Mediterranean Sea. The sea, however, was controlled by the Ottoman Empire and required a hefty toll. For this reason, Columbus did “not go eastward by land in the usual manner but by the western way” (Doc 1).…
They had been living here for a while when he got here. So how could “he” have “discovered” America and everything in it? That is something I have been wondering for years now, but I guess that is a question that will never get answered… By anyone. There is also another MAJOR reason that Columbus day should not exist.…
In both of the letters that Columbus and Hariot wrote about their newly found lands, they have very similar approaches to explaining what the lands are like. They both talk about how the landscape is, how indigenous people are, the current situation of the government, and the economic and religious structure for the lands. The tone that seemed to be past around, is that the native Americans were weak and unknowledgeable, and that their lands would be very easy to conquer for each party. During Columbus's account, he focuses mainly on the current living situations of the islands he found, and how the Indians were treating him and his crew.…
The problem with Columbus day lies in the name. Named after the Spanish explorer, Christopher Columbus, Columbus day carries the implications of oppression, deception, and genocide. However, this is not what Columbus day should be celebrated for. Columbus day should instead represent the connection between the new and old world, and as one of the greatest events in human history. Even if that means a new name.…
In school, children are taught about the great adventurer Christopher Columbus and how he discovered the New World. People learned to lionize him as the hero who discovered the country of America, but what’s never mentioned is that Christopher Columbus is not what Americans are lead to believe. The facts that are missing from history books is that he was a slave owner, a murderer, cruel, and greedy. If he possessed all of these terrible traits, then why is there a day dedicated to him? No good person would celebrate Hitler, so why should Christopher Columbus be celebrated?…
While many have depicted Columbus as a benevolent explorer who discovered the New World, he wasn't particularly kind, and some think he didn't discover the New World. We now have evidence of many explorers that had reached the Americas before him. Also, he only visited islands near North America. Therefore he never made it to North America. When Columbus landed in 1492, it is estimated there were between 10 and 15 million indigenous people in the area that now constitutes the United States.…
Wilbur Wright was born on April 16th, 1867 in Millville, Indiana. Although Wilburs most known sibling is Orville, he actually had five other brothers and sisters. There names were Katharine, Lorin, Ida, Otis, and Reuchlin. Wilbur also grew up with a mother and father named Susan and Milton Wright. Before Wilbur grew up as a very intelligent child and excelled in school.…
Europe had many good explorers such as Christopher Columbus as i think you all have heard. But another one in particular is a man named Walter Raleigh. You may not have heard of this particular explorer so let's learn a little more about him shall we. Walter Raleigh was born in England around 1552 and grew up in a farmhouse near east of Burleigh Devon England. He lived in england most of all his life maybe different cities…
One-fourth of the way [to Asia] he came upon an unknown uncharted land…–the Americas” (2). This is not to say that he did not accomplish a great feat, but rather to say that what he did accomplish was not an original objective of his. Nevertheless, whether it was accidental or intentional, Columbus did introduce Europe to the Americas, thus creating a permanent relationship between the two. On the contrary, Columbus is responsible, directly and indirectly, for the death of 250,000 Arawak Indians. Of course this is true, but his reasons for doing so further define him as an honorable man.…
The Europeans wanted to colonize the Native Americans by converting them to Christianity and relocating them. Colonization is a settlement of a group of people who seek to take control of territories or countries. Usually involved a large amount of an immigration of people to a new location and the expansion of their civilization and culture into this area. They forced Natives on to a small portion of land known as reservations to keep them secluded from non-natives and in hopes of them dying off.…
But he destroyed the Native culture. Mass destruction starting at violence, rape, disease, exaction, and finally Genocide. This is why Christopher Columbus is a villain. Work…
The date of Raleigh's actual birth, as to when Walter Raleigh was born is questionable, although the Oxford Dictionary assumes it to be 1554. Walter Raleigh was born in Devon, England in a farmhouse to Walter Raleigh and Katherine Gilbert. Walter was the youngest of five sons of a Protestant family, and his half brother was the famous explorer, Sir Humphrey Gilbert. Growing up during the Tudor time period, many affluent families sent their sons to chantry schools. At a young age, Walter left England to fight alongside the French Protestants in the Wars of Religion from 1571 to 1574 in France.…
Argument: The men he arrived with treated the Indians in a similar way. The people of the first settlements copied his methods. Future colonies would continue to mistreat them until their near…
He used people for his needs, pressured them about Christianity, enslaved many and most importantly, genocide. The rulers of Spain, King Ferdinand of Aragon and Queen Isabella of Castille sent Columbus and his crew to find the riches out in the new world. In 1942, he sailed the ocean blue with the Santa Maria, Pinta and Nina. Columbus set sailed from Spain and planned to make it to Asia because he’s heard that’s where all the gold and spices are, but landed west of his intended location. He was actually…
