On these trips Columbus would gain knowledge of atlantic currents. The atlantic currents flow east and west from the canary islands. Muslim control of the trade routes through the Middle East made travel to India and China difficult. Columbus needed to find a better option. He Believed a route sailing west across the Atlantic would be quicker and safer. Christopher Columbus made a plan to sail west to reach the East,believing the earth was a sphere, Columbus decided to try his theory out. Columbus got his crew together right away, as he had been waiting years to go on this voyage. Columbus got together three ships, the Nina, the Pinta and the Santa Maria. In August of 1492, Columbus left Spain aboard the Santa Maria. The Nina and the Pinta where both alongside. Columbus sailed for 36 days when he came upon the present day Bahamas. Christopher Columbus claimed the Bahamas for Spain. While Columbus was in the Bahamas, he met a group of native people called the Arawak People. Columbus was able to establish trading of goods with the native people. Columbus traded thing like glass beads, cotton balls, parrots and spears the Arawak. Columbus continued his exploration ending up in Cuba and Hispaniola. During their expedition, the Santa Maria sank off the Hispaniola coast.
