At this time in Church history Bibles were not made available to the public. The ones that were were published at the time were only printed in Latin and only to be used in the church by the clergy. Columbus who was educated better than most of the people at the time was able to read Latin. The Church did not want the members to read the Bible instead they relied on their priests to convert and save the population. If not for his faith, determination and and lobbying the Kingdom of Spain he may not have received the financial backing to fulfill his mission. In April 1492 the “Capitulations of Santa Fe” was signed between Columbus and the Spanish Monarchs. They promised him if he succeeded in his ventures he would be given many title such as: Don, Admiral of the Ocean Sea, Viceroy, and Governor of all Spanish land that he discovered. He was entitled to 10% of revenues that was made in the new lands that would be passed down through the decedents of Columbus. He had the means needed to pursue his dream of sailing west. The Spanish Monarchs order three ships and crew for Columbus to make his voyage. They were not the best ships in the world because the monarchs had little faith that Columbus would not find anything. On August 3, 1492 Columbus embarked on his historic journey. Not long after setting sail one of his ships rudder broke.
