When Columbus returned with 14 more ships than the last voyage, he was discontented to see what the chief had done. To prove his dominance, Columbus and his crew had depleted the chief’s entire gold inquiry and confiscated his people’s lavish jewels. In result of Columbus’ actions, fighting broke out. Columbus then undertook many disturbing actions.
One of the most startling events was that of publicly beheading 3 of the chief’s captains. Another alarming event included the capturing of 500 Indians, shipping them to Spain, and then selling them as slaves. Columbus even ordered his men to strip the Indians of anything that held value. All fur items were taken along with their leather clothing, and jewelry of any kind. Native Americans have obviously never been treated with any sort of respect. Not even the kind of respect that you earn as a human being.
People coming to the Americas never liked the Native Americans. This can be seen in the Declaration of Independence when it addresses Native Americans as “Merciless Indian Savages” (Dcyoutube.com, 2018). And again during Teddy Roosevelt’s New York speech in 1886. He announced, “I don’t go so far as to think that the only good Indians are the dead Indians, but I believe nine out of every ten are” (Landry, 2018). In fact, “suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death among [Natives] ages 15-24, and the 3rd among ages 5-14 and 25-44” (En.wikipedia.org, 2018) Native Americans have gone to court numerous times to try to get support, but the U.S. Supreme Court “justifies” land being taken by claiming, “The United States has unequivocally agreed… that discovery gave an exclusive right to extinguish the Indian title of occupancy.” This statement in itself is complete and utter flim-flam. The Native Americans discovered and occupied the Americas thousands of years before Columbus “discovered” it. Hence the name
