In Spain his voyage was to discover a trade route to Asia through the Atlantic Ocean in search for Gold, and other valuable resources. On his journey to Asia Columbus and his sailors discovered an island which would be later called Cuba and furthered his destination to other islands in the Caribbean from Barbados to the Dominican Republic . Christopher Columbus is the reason why the Caribbean is known as the West Indies because when he arrived he thought he was in India. Roosevelt made a statement on Columbus Day elaborate on the impact Columbus had on America. " The voyage of Christopher Columbus... was only a prelude to a historical era... The promise which discovery gave to the world, or a new beginning in the march of human progress, has been in process of fulfillment for four centuries"(Document 3) Roosevelt has demonstrated his understanding of Christopher Columbus, but he 's bias in his speech by not acknowledge the pain and death that he caused to many Native - Americans. Roosevelt states "Created The America to which the Old World contributed so magnificently" As the President of the United States, President Roosevelt has the position to take both sides and compromise both feelings. Through this text he 's glorifying his discovery but not taking in the actions that his discovery led to. For example "The early movement of European people to America" which resulted in the Native Americans population decline dramatically. The reliability of his words wouldn 't be valuable since he 's a respected person in the country and he may have Christopher Columbus seem like a hero by using heroic diction to emphasize his importance to American history. On October 9, 2009, Barack Obama talked about Columbus impact. " Christopher Columbus sailed across the Atlantic Ocean in a bold attempt to expand human understanding of the known world. His voyage radically altered the course of history and changed our world forever... Today we reflect on the transformation of North America from a land of boundless opportunity to the modern communities of the 21st century... explorers of Italian descents have directly influenced the Growth of North America... From the boardroom to the classroom, they are prominent in every facet of American life" (Document 4) President Obama purpose for this speech is not to commend Christopher Columbus, but to acknowledge all Italian explorers for their impact in American lives. Even if Columbus had not sailed to the Americas, it would not make much difference as he was not the only person interested in explorations and expeditions. Much Europeans were focused in exploring and the only difference would be that the Natives wouldn’t have gone through such kind of brutality and cruelty conducted by Columbus. People aren’t much aware about the myth of Christopher Columbus and they still believe that he discovered America. But it’s a completely false fact and he can clearly be considered to be a villain as he has been gaining honor for something that he never did and also conducted genocide of the Native American people. Therefore, he is clearly a…

The Disney movie Pocahontas offers the viewer a stark portrayal of how Englishmen viewed Indigenous American tribes upon their arrival to the United States. The movie features a song titled Savages where Pocahontas and her fellow Powhatan tribespeople are described by the English settlers as “barely even human” and “dirty shrieking devils”. In reality, the first European explorers had much more diverse accounts of their experiences with indigenous peoples in North and Central America. To accurately evaluate early settlers interactions with American tribespeople, the works of Christopher Columbus, Cabeza de Vaca, and John Smith will be examined. Christopher Columbus was an Italian explorer who landed in the Caribbean islands after a two month…

One voyage that is brought up in every history class is Columbus “discovering” the New World. It is said that Christopher Columbus founded America, but in reality people have been living in the New World long before Columbus “discovered” it. Columbus’ discovery changed the way the Native Americans and Europeans lived. When Columbus landed in America, he wrote a letter to the King Sanchez and Queen Isabella.…

But as time went on, European’s had the greatest adventure of all; coming to the New World.…

In school, children are taught about the great adventurer Christopher Columbus and how he discovered the New World. People learned to lionize him as the hero who discovered the country of America, but what’s never mentioned is that Christopher Columbus is not what Americans are lead to believe. The facts that are missing from history books is that he was a slave owner, a murderer, cruel, and greedy. If he possessed all of these terrible traits, then why is there a day dedicated to him? No good person would celebrate Hitler, so why should Christopher Columbus be celebrated?…

However, what these people fail to realise is that he may have had an impact on where people sailed in the fifteen hundreds, he was about 500 years late to being the first sailor to come across it, not even taking into consideration the “some 145 million people” who already inhabited the hemisphere in 1492 (Document B). Columbus's influence on future sea voyages may have been great, but it merely led more explorers to conquer lands of Natives and then enslaving them, showing that any impact he had was certainly not positive. Another argument which some use to support the continuation of Columbus Day is that “it is necessary to pay a price for progress,” and that just like “Hiroshima and Vietnam,” we must do anything for the preservation and expansion of Western society and ideology (Document H). This argument is misguided as the slaughter of thousands of innocent Natives through slavery and barbaric ruling cannot be compared to dropping a bomb which will end a war, that would have kill millions of soldiers. It also does not compared to a war launched in order to protect the freedom of other people from the oppression communism.…

Columbus Day is an unnecessary holiday that, for some reason, we still honor today. The holiday is also an affront to the indigenous population. The false sense of patriotism is wrong to memorialize. The whole day is based off of a fabrication of the true events. When children are in elementary school, they are taught that Christopher Columbus was a hero, to shield the truth.…

The Europeans wanted to colonize the Native Americans by converting them to Christianity and relocating them. Colonization is a settlement of a group of people who seek to take control of territories or countries. Usually involved a large amount of an immigration of people to a new location and the expansion of their civilization and culture into this area. They forced Natives on to a small portion of land known as reservations to keep them secluded from non-natives and in hopes of them dying off.…

We shouldn't celebrate Columbus Day. Not just because he was a bad person. Yes, it is because spread so much disease, and I really don’t want to be celebrating someone who committed near genocide. But mainly, I don’t want to have a day where the Native Americans in our country feel hurt and betrayed as we celebrate the man who killed so many of their ancestors. The majority of people in America aren't Native American.…

The holiday of Columbus Day has kindled an irrefutable amount of controversy in recent years. One side of this bilateral argument asserts that Columbus opened up a global trade network while the other declares that his travels led to the decimation and abuse of the Native American population. One argues that Columbus Day should exist, while the other calls for its removal. However, this argument, along with the current Columbus Day, is overly simplified. To extract the true meaning of Columbus Day, Columbus himself must be withdrawn from the center of the holiday, and the holiday should recognize both the positive and negative results of October 12th, 1492.…

Columbus’s voyages started this epic exchange and it is something that historians are still studying the impact of today. Not only did Columbus’s discovery allow for the biological, ecological, and cultural exchanges to occur. It also allowed Spain to build a powerful maritime empire in North and South America by creating a permanent new route for Spanish ships to travel between Europe and the Americas and paved the way for other European powers to establish colonies in both North and South America. Without this steady travel between the two continents, colonization of North and South America would have been much more…
