The evidence for Christopher’s inability to connect on an emotional level is shown through the use of emoticons in Chapter 3. The emoticons disrupt the traditional narrative form therefore serve to critique traditional ways of communication reveal that although Christopher is able to recognise basic emotions such as happy and sad, he cannot recognise more subtle, complex emotions, or their causes. The happy emoticon is used once more when Christopher receives the results of his A-level and emphasises that Christopher is unable to express emotions through actions and words. The effects that this has on his parents can be seen during their fight in Judy Boone’s apartment in the short sentence ‘There were tears dripping down his face’. The irony is employed by Haddon as Christopher is able to describe his father’s distress in an unemotional and detached manner whilst the reader is so emotionally involved. In this same chapter, Judy Boone begs her son ‘Let me hold your hand. Just for once’, to which Christopher replies ‘I don’t like people holding my hand’, the short sharp sentence structure once again portraying his lack of emotional acknowledgement. This conversation further brings to life the limited successes of the Boone family to restore order in their lives, as although she ran away and created a semblance of order in her new life, Judy Boone was drawn back into confusion and hurt with the unexpected arrival of her heavily behavioral challenged child who has Autism Spectrum Disorder
