Christopher Boone has many characteristics, but one really distinct one is his inability to express love or feelings. In the novel, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime written by Mark Haddon, Christopher has a condition known as Asperger’s and many people with it also have a seeming lack of feelings or inability to express or understand others emotions. Christopher’s mother left him and his dad and his dad didn’t know how tell him. So, Christopher though that she passed away until he found the letters that she was writing him. Throughout the book, you follow Christopher along his journey and see how not understanding his own feelings or others impact his life dramatically in a negative and positive way.

It’s clear that Christopher's had an inability to express emotion because after his mother’s death he did not show sadness or grief and was more surprised. This allowed Christopher to not become overwhelmed with emotions and thought, he had the chance to still focus on the things he enjoyed like facts and his maths. With this, Christopher benefits from the trait because it helped him cope with news like this. Although this trait can be good for Christopher, it may have more roadblocks and negatives to it.
The inability to express love or feeling also had negatives to it and created roadblocks for Christopher. Siobhan was one of Christopher's teachers at school. She seemed to be only one that really understood Christopher and he seemed to really like her too. Christopher wrote, “I got Siobhan to draw lots of these faces and then write down next to them exactly what they meant. I kept the piece of paper in my pocket and took it out when I didn't understand what someone was saying. But it was very difficult to decide which of the diagrams was most like the face they were making because people's faces move very quickly.” (Page 2) This quote gives us a sense of how difficult it was for Christopher to communicate with others as he couldn't understand what they were expressing …show more content…

It is like being in France, which is where we went on holiday sometimes when mother was alive, to camp. (67.4)” In the quote, it’s clear that Christopher has trouble speaking with strangers because people he's close with adjust their communication so he can understand it but when it comes to talking with strangers, Christopher doesn't understand what they are trying to tell him.
