History of “It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas”
The song was written by Meredith Wilson. He apparently wrote the song in the Grand Hotel in 1950 or 1951. When it was written the stores were putting out there Christmas items. One verse of the song was based off of Hop along Cassidy. Five people used the song in different ways. Johnny Mathis recorded it and used it for his second Christmas album. “It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas” the one by Johnny Mathis is used in Home Alone 2: Lost in New York. Bing Crosby, Andy Williams, Perry Como, Michael Buble, and Johnny Mathis rewrote the song but kept most of the words and used them mostly on Christmas albums or in movies.

A few months after writing his song “Cinderella”, Steven Curtis Chapman’s youngest daughter was tragically hit by her brother’s SUV when she ran out to meet him upon his arrival home. This devastating event gave a whole new meaning to “Cinderella”, and Chapman poured more emotion into his performance of the song than ever before, using the song as a way to cope with his grief. In David Lindsay-Abaire’s Rabbit Hole, the Corbett family suffers from a similar experience when Becca and Howie’s four-year-old son, Danny, runs out in front of a car and is killed. All of the characters deal with the grief of losing someone so young, and all of them grieve in their own, unique ways. Lindsay-Abaire displays the theme that, while grief is a universal…

Essay Question #2 Melanie A Morway October 6, 2016 The way that our text book describes Charlemagne and the way that the selection from Einhard describes Charlemagne are different in several ways, yet there are some similarities. Our text book describes him as a man that was instrumental in implementing the practices of a Feudal society in Europe. “Perhaps the most important ruler to codify and adopt these practice was Charlemagne, who dreamed not only of unifying Europe under his rule, but also unifying Church and state in a single administrative and political bureaucracy”(Sayre, pg 82). Our text book goes on the discuss Charlemagne’s accomplishments. Einhard’s writing takes a more personal turn, and describes not only his personal and private life, but also describes his looks.…

In ‘Shuffle Off to Bethlehem,’ chapter 8 of Amusing Ourselves to Death, Neil Postman argues that television preachers have warped modern religion into another cheap form of entertainment. In support of his argument he makes the following three points: that the medium of television is inherently secular and therefore cannot properly convey religious messages; that television preachers must change their dogma for the sake of ratings; and that official places of worship create a better atmosphere then a television program could ever produce. Postman argues that the medium of television is inherently secular; therefore any religious message broadcast on television will be degraded in some way. Postman points out that people generally see watching…

Although the book and movie were very similar, they were also very different in many ways. For example, the Ghost of Christmas Past was a very elegant, almost glowing woman. In the book however, the Ghost of Christmas Past was practically “like a child: yet not so like a child as like an old man” (A Christmas Carol, 53). Secondly, Tiny Tim, in the movie, actually waited out for his father while he was at work, and they walked home together. In the book, Bob Cratchit, Tiny Tim’s father, walked home alone and played with the children in the street, slipping and sliding in the ice.…

I don 't believe I have missed a single "Countdown to Christmas" movie this year on the Hallmark Channel nor its sister network Hallmark Movies & Mysteries. While I have my personal favorites, there is no denying that a massive hit this year was their film A Heavenly Christmas starring Eric McCormack, Kristin Davis, and the legendary Shirley MacClaine. My family and I thoroughly enjoyed this film, and when I discovered that Gregg McBride was the screenwriter for this Yuletide treat, I quickly reached out to him for an interview. I was incredibly elated when he responded (and so quickly too). Gregg graciously agreed to answer a few questions about his passion for writing, his personal struggles in his own life, and even a bit about his future…

Thylias Moss poem, “Interpretation of a poem by Frost”, entails a story on racism through the relationship between a man named Jim Crow, who represents a racial institution in the United States for a lengthy period, and a young black girl, who symbolize racial oppression on African-Americans. The poem is powerful in its message by highlighting the feelings of many African-Americans who were discriminated against. Also, the poem progression of emotional intensity further proves how African slaves in America felt at the time. The poem begins with “a young black girl stopped by the woods”. Moss likely precedes the first lime as a background setting informing readers on where the poem takes place.…

In “Those Winter Sundays” by Robert Hayden and “My Father’s Song” by Simon J. Ortiz, there is love found within by a man’s memories of his childhood relationship with his Father. “Those Winter Sundays” is about a man who is remembering the relationship he had with his father through regret, because he realizes how unappreciative he was. “My Father’s Song” is a man reminiscing on the actions his father makes when showing him the value of life and how to grow up. Within both of these poems the father-son relationship does not show verbal communication. In “Those Winter Sundays,” this lack of communication helps indicate the distance between the two, whereas the communication breakdown in “My Father’s Song” reflects the connection that the two…

While “My Papa’s Waltz” and “Those Winter Sundays” differ in the attitudes and tones of their speakers, they are alike in the complex family relationships and themes of familial love, masculinity and sacrifice, and nostalgic youth that they communicate to the reader. A close-reading of the poems, with special attention paid to the speakers and the ideas they are trying to get across, can end up telling far more about Theodore Roethke and Robert Hayden than they may like. The speaker in “My Papa’s Waltz” by Theodore Roethke is a small boy having a grand old time waltzing with his father in the kitchen before bed. His father is a little rough with him, keeping time on his noggin and accidently scraping his ear against his belt buckle on every…

Upon seeing A Christmas Carol on the night of Friday, November 18th, I had what I thought to be a firm understanding of the Charles Dicken’s classic. It was until the show was over that I realized my previous interpretation was completely senseless, with little to no opinion deriving beyond the script. As I dove into the performance in the Joan C, Edwards playhouse, I made personal connections that I had never made before when watching other adaptions of A Christmas Carol, in particular Scrooge (1970), my father’s favorite. Every detail of this performance aided in my overwhelming positive review, asserting this play as my favorite of all the revisions I have seen.…

I am not sure about all of you, but I have recently been hearing the phrase “it’s cuffing season” more and more often. I might be old-fashioned, but I had not heard of this before this year. So let me explain it for those of you like me who have no idea what it is. In simplest terms, when the winter months come, single people find themselves searching for a partner more than they normally would throughout the rest of the year. Studies show it has to do with the cold weather, the lack of daylight, or the festive holiday season that makes people desire a partner during this time.…

Through time, several historical events have been represented by the principles of hatred, crime and inhumanity. History has told us that hatred and inhumanity comes in many shapes, whether it is due to skin colour, religion or even political persuasions. Furthermore it has told us that it easily evolves into something horrifying. But most importantly history tells us that no hatred or crime are so big that we as human beings can’t cope with it and change it for the better. In the column “In Ireland, Tuesdays Grace” Bono describes the horrifying events that took place on January 30, 1972, a day better known as “Bloody Sunday”.…
