What do you think of when you think of giving? You probably think of Christmas or someone’s birthday. What would you do if we lived in a world where we are all the same, no color, no differences, everything planned out for us? Would you enjoy it, or want to rebel? Giving is much more than Christmas or a birthday. Sometimes the best gift you can give are memories. We don’t realize how important things are until we lose them. “The Giver” by Lois Lowry shows us things we may not have thought of before. They live a life of sameness, they can choose nothing for themselves. Until Jonas, the protagonist, decides to change that. He goes on a journey to find Elsewhere. In the end of “The Giver,” Jonas and Gabriel froze to death in the snowstorm because the things Jonas sees are the memories he liked the most, Jonas and Gabe had been walking for days with no warmth, and even if they reached where they were going they would have froze or gotten frostbite.

He had always liked this memory, and it is unlikely that there was some sled left out just for Jonas at the top of a hill. And this sled just so happened to lead to the place where the family was celebrating, the memory that Jonas had loved. There is no way the people in the house could have known Jonas and Gabe were coming. Jonas was probably thinking of how he wanted to celebrate that holiday with his family and friends. His brain showed him what he wanted to see before he died. Jonas was freezing, starving, dehydrated, and possibly sleep deprived. Even if they made it to some house in the middle of nowhere, he would have been dead before he could get
