Christmas in Cuba is one of the most joyous occasions in the country and observed with great fun and festivity. Following the declaration of
Cuba as an atheist nation in 1962, the festival was removed from list of holidays of Cuban calendar in the year 1969 when Fidel Castro decided it was interfering with the sugar harvest festival. Cuban authorities banned the public display of Christmas trees and nativity scenes, other than in places frequented by tourists, such as hotels. But in 1997, President Castro restored the holiday to honor, in the honor of the visit of Pope John Paul II in the island.

In America, Christmas is an annual Christian festival celebrating Christ’s birth, but some people look at this time to give gifts and greeting cards to family and friends. Puerto Rico celebrates Christmas by having Christmas caroling, and when they carol, they play some sort of instrument, either guitars or tambourines. They also gather together inside for refreshments and music. Panama celebrates Christmas by having festive parades and festive floats that are brightly decorated and the woman wear dresses call polleras and the men wear monunos (pictures located on last page). While I wrote about Cuban Catholicism for my encyclopedia-style summary, there are not any specifically Cuban churches existing in Minnesota. Because of this, I decided that the next closest thing would be to visit a Spanish-language Catholic mass. I visited St. Odilia Catholic Church in Shoreview, Minnesota. While St. Odilia is not an exclusively Hispanic community, they do offer a Spanish mass every Sunday afternoon. There is a relatively large Hispanic community in Roseville, Shoreview, Arden Hills, and the surrounding areas which attend the mass.…

Cuba's prevailing religion is Christianity, primarily Roman Catholicism, although in some instances it is profoundly modified and influenced through syncretism. A common syncretic religion is Santería, which combined the Yoruba religion of the African slaves with Catholicism and some Native American strands; it shows similarities to Brazilian Umbanda and has been receiving a degree of official support. The Roman Catholic Church estimates that 60 percent of the population is Catholic,[2] but only 5% of that 60% attends mass regularly,[3] while independent sources estimate that as few 1.5% of the population does so.[4] Membership in Evangelical Protestant churches is estimated to be 5 percent and includes Baptists, Pentecostals, Seventh-day Adventists, Presbyterians,…

Constructions of gender throughout Cuban history have shaped Cuba into the country that it is. Both masculine and feminine constructions have occurred, with Fidel Castro’s beard as a sign of masculinity or how patriarchy before the 1930’s shaped the way that women were sexualized and controlled. In the past century, women’s roles had changed tremendously from before the revolution, during the revolution, and post-revolution. Cuban women were sexualized before the revolution, which increased tourism in Cuba. As the revolution started, the gender constructions of women changed Cuban history because they started the revolution and made up a large percentage of the top revolutionary leadership.…

The Cuban Revolution took place between the years 1953-1959. The revolution, technically, started in 1952 when Fulgencio Batista took power in Cuba, again. Batista had previously been an army sergeant in Cuba from 1921-1940 and president from 1940-1944; however, with these new elections in 1952, Batista was certain that he was going to lose, so he then decided to take power. Fidel Castro would’ve most likely won a seat in their “Congress” if the elections would’ve been done, but since they weren’t done he didn’t win anything. So he was enraged and began to plot a way to overthrow Batista.…
