Before the shocking event at the end of the film, I kept wondering what was the point in chronicling the life of this news reporter. As the narrative unfolds, the story appears to be a real downbeat tale of a woman suffering from severe depression—a sad sack if you will who is hard to care for at all. As I say in all my reviews involving weak ego characters—these are the "sad sacks" who simply do not make for good drama.

Perhaps the straw that breaks the camel's back is when George reveals that he's been chosen to be transferred to a more desirable market in Baltimore. This propels Christine to drive over to the home of Bob Anderson, the station owner, in the mistaken belief that he's also chosen her to move to Baltimore.
