During Adnan Syed’s case, his lawyer was Christina Gutierrez. Christina Gutierrez is known as “one of the Baltimore area's most ferocious criminal defense lawyers”, however, she lost Adnan’s trial. Gutierrez had valid points and was very determined but did that serve Adnan justice? Gutierrez was known as “a pit bull on the pant leg of case, but justice.” Even though Gutierrez is a star lawyer, but some negative factors might have affected the result of the trial. As in the Podcasts ‘Serial’, it was stated that Gutierrez spent many hours interrogating both Jay and Mr. S. Gutierrez has been accused of stealing money from clients as well as not communicating with them. His new lawyer, Justin C. Brown, claims that Gutierrez “violated something fundamental to the trial process and the duty of loyalty that is the heart of attorney-client relationships...his lawyer effectively …show more content…
Another aspect is when Adnan or his parents would ask her about the plans, she would always dismiss them. She was careless with communicating with her client and his family. The same year as Adnan’s trial, she had another case with the Whitman’s. Gutierrez was defending a boy that has been accused of killing his brother. When she was asked for a conference to discuss some plans and information, Gutierrez refused. However, She did seem to care for this case too.
Gutierrez has also been accused of misusing the firm’s funds for personal use. Gutierrez has a disorder called scoliosis. Scoliosis is a sideways curvature of the spine that occurs most often during the growth spurt just before puberty. According to the article ‘Lawyer Gutierrez agrees to disbarment’, she was in the hospital for the majority of winter and became blind in one eye, she also stated that she could barely walk; so she decided to resign.
