Christians Should Read Non-Christian Literature

Decent Essays
What are the reasons that Christians should read non-Christian literature? Why do they need the other side of the story? Christians sometimes seclude themselves from the outside world because of their beliefs. It is always good to read about the world’s view of the topic even though it might not be true, as a result it helps you see history through different views, but it also helps us know what we believe, as it says in 1 Thessalonians 5:21, but test everything that is said. Hold on to what is good.

C.S. Lewis voices multiple concerns when asked the question: “Can’t you lead a good life without believing in Christianity?” More than anything else, Lewis is concerned with the idea that in order to even ask the question, a person must be aware that Christianity exists and has a moral code of how to live a good life. If the person asking the question is aware of these things, then the question immediately is no longer really about whether you can lead a good life without Christianity, and more about whether you want to. Lewis also points out that this approach is based on a mindset of wanting to do things that are most helpful to you, rather than things that are based in truth. According to Lewis, all men are inherently inclined towards a desire for truth.…

    C. S. Lewis, in his classic work “Mere Christianity,” describes a basic Christian worldview. A significant theme of the book is on what the issues of morality means for the human race, as well as what morality means in relation to God and to one another. Where does morality come from and how does one become moral? Morality originates with God, Lewis argues, nor can man be truly moral apart from the transforming work of Jesus Christ.…

How does the story of the Lion, the Witch, and the wardrobe reflect Christian beliefs and what does it teach us about the Christian faith? By Adam Shooshtarian The story of Narnia is one of the most popular fantasy novels in the world having sold over 100 million copies in 47 different languages. When you read or watch Narnia for the first time you may not understand the true meaning of the events taking place, for there is more depth and hidden meaning to what seems like an innocent children’s book. There are many references to Christian beliefs and the film itself is packed with references to Christianity. When C.S. Lewis wrote Narnia his true aim was not to educate children about Christianity but to introduce children to similar ideas to make it easier for them to accept Christianity as it was the main religion in England.…

This “good judgement”, however, is very subjective. When parents have a meeting about banning a certain book from the town’s library or from the school, they will most likely all have different ideas of what should and should not be banned. To add on, these parents would not be exposing their children to many important subjects. Children should know how things were in history to know they should not repeat them. Reading books, is a way for these children to have an almost first-hand experience without the consequences of doing it.…
