Every evening the World News illustrates acts of war between Christianity and Islamic cultures. They are two of the most profound religions throughout the world. Though this is not a new headline; violence has erupted between these two religious groups for nearly 1500 years. Despite bearing some minor similarities, the differences between Christianity and Islamic beliefs are fiercely noticeable. Dissection of the religious origins, common beliefs, and social structure will assist in understanding this continuous clash. Christianity began shortly after the start of the Roman Empire. The Islamic tradition recognizes a lot of both the Jewish and Christian prophets, including Moses, Abraham, and Jesus although he is not considered to be the Son of God within the Islam religion. Although by mistake many non-Muslims believe that Muhammad is the equivalent of Jesus Christ within the Islamic tradition, when in fact the Quran is what stands as the equivalent of Jesus within the Islamic tradition. In the Islamic religion there are six pillars of faith: Belief in Allah which means there is one unique God (Allah) who should be worshipped and obeyed, his angels also known as “ Mala-eka” believed to have been created by Allah , his books to mankind which is believed to have been revealed from time to time through his prophets there are five prominent books which include: Abraham’s scroll, Zabur (Psalms), revealed to prophet David, Tawrah (Torah), revealed to the prophet Moses, and also revealed to the prophet Jesus, another pillar includes: his prophets and messengers which Muslims believe that Allah sent prophets to all of mankind as messengers for their guidance, another pillar is the day of judgment and also destiny, although in Christianity there is no such thing as “pillars of faith”, faith is based on belief in Jesus Christ, his books to mankind also known as “The Bible”, and also “Judgment Day”. In fact, Islam rejects all forms of terrorism, extremism and fundamentalism. To terrorize others or harm others is actually considered to be a sin in the religion of Islam. The word Jihad has become a term that is used incorrectly, Jihad does not mean “Holy War” and is not meant to declare war against others especially Christians. Jihad means striving or struggling or exerting more effort for the betterment of one’s self or community at large. Just as Christianity has, over time people have misinterpreted beliefs and slowly Islamic Radicals have done the same.
Christianity and Islam were once very similar religions, but overtime different social aspects have led them to become seemingly different and lead to war. Both religions were intended to be the same in regards to beliefs but Muslims who have misinterpreted the Quran ultimately is what has led to the chaos between the two religions.
