Christianity claims that suicide is a form of murder, murder in which the person destroys their life. It is said that it is denying God and the murder of which was created in the image of God. Though, many believe if one takes their own life they will not make it to paradise. Human life is a gift, taking human life is a sin in which is against God’s highest creation. According to the Old Testament, there are five records of suicides. What makes this a terrible act is not taking an innocent life but it constitutes upon God himself. The Roman Catholic Church opposes on suicide and euthanasia. Catholics think that if one decides to take their own life, they suffer from poor management and despair. Though when a person is sick they can forgo, “treatment that doesn’t give a reasonable hope of physical or spiritual benefit, such as resuscitating someone who is at the very end of life” (Religious Groups’ Views on End-of-life issues, 2013). The Catholic Church has a dissimilarity of mortal and venial sins when it comes to suicide. Mortal sins requires full knowledge or of the act and it’s opposition of God’s will (Denison, 2011). They also believe that the fifth commandment plays a role in suicide because it is intentional killing and voluntarily as well. The theological perspective in this is that since a person commits “self-murder” they will not be able to repent therefore the person cannot be saved. Hindu teaching believes that those who assist suicide or euthanasia could negatively impact their karma. Muslims also believe if one takes their own life, it is a terrible sin because their life is sacred (Religious Groups’ Views on End-of-life issues, 2013). The bible states that you have eternal life, “whoever lives and believes in me will never die” (John 11:26). Man belongs to eternity therefore they cannot have a desire to kill themselves. Suicide is a clutch of self-destruction, many do it because they feel lonely. Whether suicide is not the unpardonable sin, the Bible teaches that one who gives their life to Christ is saved, this is not just a temporary life. Like many, one may find themselves in great distress, but if one doesn’t stay close to God it causes them to become unbalanced. If suicide is considered as murder, at the end we have cannot claim ownership of our own life because it pertains to God. Suicide is the complete opposite to the Cross of Christ but rather a betrayal to the word of God. Though many may argue that Christ committed suicide but he sacrificed himself in order to set us free. So if someone commits suicide is it like backstabbing God after what he did for us.
