There has always been a great debate as to the origin and role of Satan, i.e. the jinn. According to Islam, both the jinn and the humankind were created by Allah for the sole purpose of worshipping Him. Allah says in the Qur’an: “And I did not create the jinn and mankind except to worship Me.”[1]
Allah will make a speech to both the jinn and mankind on the Day of Resurrection. That means both of them were warned by their messengers and both of them are accountable for their actions. So the jinn are among the creations of Allah, and they are His servants. Both Islam and Christianity agree that there are beings that are trying to seduce us into evil and that they are called the jinn or devils. Satan in Islam is a jinn (created from a smokeless flame of fire), not an angel (because we know that no angel has free will and no angel ever went to rebellion against God). Satan is a rival to mankind, not the archenemy of God. Satan is put on this Earth as a servant of God for the purpose of seducing men with the hope that men would resist these temptations so that they can choose good over evil. If there was no Satan in this world, there would be nothing pulling us away from God, and we would have no free will. Since Allah has created everything, He is the Lord of the Creation. So Allah is the Lord of Satan, too. Satan in Christianity is the rival to God; he is “the god of this
