Religious Influence On My Life

Decent Essays
I was born into a very religious family and raised to believe in God, as a Christian. Ever since I can remember, Christianity, with its biblical principles and teachings, has been constantly stressed in my life. Religion was and still is deeply intertwined into every facet of my daily life. When I was young, my father sang Christian songs to help me fall asleep; and my mother would read bible stories before I went to bed. For Christmas and Birthdays, bibles, devotionals, bible videos, and tapes were common gifts. My cousins and I would play bible versions of various card and board games such as Go-fish, Memory or Concentration. Christian coloring and activity books were given to me for leisure activities. We would ask God for His blessings …show more content…
There were many factors that also have helped to influence how I view religion. For example, I grew up watching Christian television shows that helped to reinforce what I was being taught at home. I have fond memories of watching biblical cartoons and listening to bible stories on the radio. My favorite show was “Veggie Tales,” a cartoon that taught lessons and stories from the bible through fun parodies and songs. Attending Sunday School and participating in church related activities also influenced how I viewed religion. Listening to Christian music at home, and in the car also, positively influenced me, so much so, that even now most of the music I listen to is …show more content…
I can remember people always telling my parents what a “Good Boy” I was. They remarked on my politeness and willingness to help others, and how respectful I was. As I got older my parents were still hearing the same message from strangers who did not even know me, but were amazed at my behavior. For example, when I would offer to help someone in need such as an elderly person with their bags, or hold the door open for all of the 20 people coming in behind me. Another way religion had a positive affect on my life was how I was able to make good choices and decisions. I would base my choices on the word (the bible teachings) of God so it was easy for me to do the right thing, and do what make Jesus Proud, and my parents. “Heaven is my goal,” the songs I sang, the stories I read, and the lessons I was taught, all lead up to going to heaven when you died, or when “God called you home.” The bible taught me how I should live and by living a life in accordance with its teachings, I would go to heaven. I remember learning that heaven was a wonderful place, with streets of gold and big houses. A place without sadness, death, and bills, a place with no worldly concerns, that was heaven. However, in order to get there, I had to live a certain way. This included obeying the ten commandments and other principles in the

My life before my conversion consisted mainly of growing up in a Southern Baptist Church. Throughout my life I have heard the gospel countless times, but never accepted it as absolute truth to follow. Instead, my life until college was characterized by performing a lot of religious activity such as youth groups, church camps, and going to church on Sundays. I was in a tireless attempt to live out a religion that proved I was good enough to be declared righteous before God. It was a restless attempt to be whatever everyone else want me to be.…

My family went to church every Sunday for years until a reverend that my parents respected was asked to leave the congregation and when I decided to not be confirmed into the congregation as a teenager. I remember getting my first bible from my church after making my first communion and memorizing “The Lord’s Prayer”, but most of all I remember learning The Golden Rule. “So whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets” (Matthew 7:12, English Standard Version). I believe that this rule has truly helped shape me as a person and I do not think that you have to be religious to find meaning in this statement, which is why I believe it stuck with me.…

Religion has a great impact and deeply defines a person. This is regardless of whether the individual admits it and accepts it as a religious belief. It is not always evident if those religious beliefs have a positive or negative impact in a person’s life. A person has at least once encountered someone’s testimony about one’s powerful belief and questioned whether it could be that impactful to one’s life. It is very difficult to define who and what a person defines to be a religion and to clearly see what aspects of religion will motivate a person since all individuals have different levels of persuasion.…
