A Non-Christian Community Analysis

Improved Essays
It can be difficult as a Christian to attend a non-Christian university as the culture surrounding university life can contradict Christian values. The culture can be heavily revolved around partying, gossiping, and sex before marriage which are values Christians don’t usually associate with. However, when surrounded by it, it becomes hard to remain close to their values due to the desire to fit in. Therefore, it is important to find a Christian group where they can meet people with the same values and who help them pursue their faith. Attending a young adults group is a vital part of maintaining and developing a relationship with God while in university and helps students stay close to their values. 72) is seen frequently in the Young Adults group. Through the diversity in age and social status among the social hierarchy and social roles, Christians are able to interact with many different people and through these interactions can grow and mature in their faith. Many Christians who attend Young Adults have grown up in the church and already know God. Attending youth groups has been a large part of their childhood and they are simply carrying on that routine. Despite that they already have a Christian background, Young Adults continues to help them grow in their relationship with the Lord and form friendships that encourage them to pursue their faith. Since these people have grown up in the church and was part of their childhood, this kind of socialization is classified as primary socialization. Primary socialization is defined as “the crucial learning process that occurs in childhood and makes us members of society” (Brym, 2014, p.72). On the other hand, some Christians attending the young adults group have recently come to know God and are in the process of forming their faith. These people could have come to God on their own, or could have been influenced by a Christian friend. Young Adults helps to teach these Christians about God through sermons and social interactions between the members of the group. This type of socialization is referred to as secondary socialization which is defined as “learning that occurs after people have undergone primary socialization” (Brym, 2014, p.72). Through Young Adults, members are continually leaning about the Christian faith and forming bonds which pull them closer to each other and God. Whether a Christian has been involved in the church since childhood or are just coming to God, members can equally help each other in strengthening their relationship with the Lord and in

Some of us had testimonies of more stable lives, others of cultural Christian influences, and finally, those of us who had been in spiritual abusive situations at one point or another. As a whole, most of us had been hurt by the church at one time, and for many us, this small group was a way to possibly heal and reach back out in Christian community once more. We hadn’t been meeting for very long when this project was first started. Demographically speaking, the group was on the younger end. Stretching between the ages of…

Introduction Religious organizations, especially on college campuses, can sometimes be viewed by the public as intimidating due to the rules and stereotypes associated with religious groups. Journey, a Christian worshiping community at the College of Charleston, encourages an open-minded approach to spiritual growth throughout college by communicating with students in a way that welcomes all types of students without judgment. This organization is a discourse community, a group of people that share common goals and communicate about a particular topic, at the College of Charleston. To determine this, I compared Journey to the discourse community discussed by John Swales in his academic article. In his piece, Swales explains that to be a true…

James, I was a lot younger than I am now. In my immaturity, I didn’t find as much interest in church. While this was in part from ADHD, I also found myself tending to fall asleep from listening to pastors drone on and on in a monotone voice. Now, I am able to pay more attention and enjoy services because I am older and can appreciate more things. However, there is still a clear difference in these services.…

A leader and an individual are obligated to maintain certain characteristics in the best interest of a sports team, academic organization, or club. Every organization depends on its leaders and members to be successful. Being a participant in Christians in Action, dual credit courses at Angelina College, and National Honor Society, I notice the officers and members acting in agreement on behalf of the club or in support of their classes and grades. Christians in Action relies on guidance of a leader, especially since staff is prohibited from partaking in religious ensembles. Religion cannot be taught in public schools.…

In the article, Belonging in a “Christian Nation”: The Explicit and Implicit Associations between Religion and National Group Membership by Carly M. Jacobs, she emphasizes the fact that there are many stereotypes to what the “typical” American is. Jacobs points out that Americans (when it comes to race) is associated with being white and the religion that the “typical” American is represented is Christian. The United states is labeled as a “Christian nation” because presidents swear on a Bible and “In God We Trust” is placed on their currency. Jacob declares that in her investigation, Christianity is included in the collection of traits that help to define who counts as full members of the American national group. Non-Christians have to in a way, prove themselves in order to be considered fully American.…

The church itself was very large, which allowed several more people. On my first day in Awana, the program for kids in Christ, I was sitting awkwardly, since I didn’t know anyone. Several people were busy chatting the day away, while I was sitting alone. When they called us in, I was put with other 7th and 8th graders and sat at the unofficial “girl table.” As soon I settled in, I stared as everyone was chatting with each other-- all veterans in the church.…

In attempt to develop range in my observation of support groups, I once again found myself returning to an old stomping ground. Throughout my years in high school, I dedicated several hours a week to my local church in a growth group for high school girls. Although I currently experience mixed emotions with religion, I recalled how influential it was during my teenaged years to have such support, convincing me to return to observe a group to identify ways in why it was so helpful for me during difficult moments in my life. Luckily, my previous growth group leader was still leading groups and graciously accepted my request to be a guest that following week. Meeting once a week, the purpose of these groups was to discuss the Bible and life issues, but based on personal experience, these groups offered much more than a few life lectures.…

As I read and pondered on the Moralistic Therapeutic Deism thesis written by Christian Smith, it is of my opinion this unfounded religion depicts the lackadaisical attitude some teenagers as well as adults have chosen to live by. When reading some of the responses from various young people the perception is they know God does exist, however God to them is a feel good God meaning they know God is around and He answers when they are in need for something as well as when they are experiencing a problem. For example the response from “One fifteen-year-old Hispanic conservative Protestant girl from Florida expressed the therapeutic benefits of her faith in these terms: “God is like someone who is always there for you; I don’t know, it’s like God…

When photographer Luján Agusti first moved to Mexico from her native Argentina, she was immediately struck by the myriad religious festivals taking place throughout the year. “Religion is everywhere,” she says. Agusti, who describes herself as agnostic, became fascinated by the characters and reenactments she would come across during celebrations marking Holy Week, local church anniversaries, and the Day of the Dead. Documenting this colorful blending of Catholicism with indigenous culture, a fusion defined as syncretism, became the crux of her work.…

Religion occurs where ever societies exist, from the Sumerians and the Ancient Egyptians right through to modern society religion is everywhere. This essay will look at religion from a sociological perspective and try to answer whether or not Britain is becoming a more secular society. When it comes to religion sociologists, unlike theologists and philosophers, are not as interested in the details of religions themselves, but in what effects religion has on its particular society. The sociological study or religion is separate from the philosophical approach, which is concerned with such questions as the nature and existence of God and the relationship between God and science (William Alston, 1967), in that it does not seek to answer whether or not there, is any validity to religious beliefs. Sociologist Peter L Berger (1967) coined the term ‘methodological atheism’ to describe the process needed in comparing the different beliefs of various religions.…
