Christian Ethics By Peter Mahoney

We as Christians have a duty to fulfill. That is to portray the work, legacy, and mercy of our savior and God. As part of our Christian Ethics course at Bishop James Mahoney we are challenged and required to illustrate the meaning of what it is like to be a Christian and what our faith is really supposed to be about. Each student is required to fill a minimum of 10 service hours, a minimum of five hours that pertain to the corporal works of mercy and the rest volunteering in our community and serving others. We are also challenged to go beyond that minimum and not have a mindset of “it’s just an assignment” rather to discover something else within that one might not have known was there and make a lifestyle change to be more giving. …show more content…
The best experiences that I found were really interesting went on throughout the days of me helping out there. They were the stories that the residents told. I was at the houses over Remembrance Day and that week and I based some of the activities that I had done on the topic of remembrance. One lady grew up in England and went into the army at age 17. She was one of the many nurses working in the army at the time. She told me different stories about her time in the army and some of the things that she had endured while saving some of the men’s lives. There was another lady who was 103 years old who told me that she had grown up in England as well, and her family had come to Canada for a better life. Her father and two brothers were just about to go out and fight in the First World War, and the war had ended the day that they were going to leave to fight. She told me this a day before she had passed away. Some of the days were not all that easy either. I would always try to include and try to encourage the residents to participate but sometimes they would not, and it would drain you mentally. I was warned and knew that some days some of the residents would have company, fall and be hurt/sick, or not feel up to it but I had to adjust to the situations that I was put …show more content…
As said in Matthew 5:16 “In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven”, I think this is why all of us are here, so that we can proclaim our love to the Lord through helping our fellow brothers and sisters! I felt I portrayed this in my volunteering through spreading good works and helping for nothing in return but giving glory to Him every day. Every day before I’d go to volunteer and even in the summer to work there, I would pray that God would guide me through the day, and show me how he was working through me to help these people, and that he would grant good health to the residents at the houses. God sees everything that we do and is always with us in our lives. He much more appreciates when we use Him and define Him in a light of good rather than evil. Everyone should use this as a model when ploughing through

In regards to the play, "The Christians," by Lucas Hnath, the controversy the Christians vs. Christians, quarrel about the existence of hell. Ultimately, the idea that hell does not exist in the presence of Christianity seems absurd, since Christians deem the origin of evil behavior to be stored there. In another literary work "the philosophy of pitchforks," it also reassesses the image of hell. Pastor Paul did have a good point when he stated that the Bible "does not say hell" (Hnath 37). The poem also correlates with the mystery behind the truth about hell.…

In today’s society, people are swept up in the wrath of being too prideful, or become greedy. These deadly sins deaden our religious life, causing us to distance ourselves from God’s path. Everyone must dig deep into their spiritual lives, and lend a helping hand to those who need it the most. Whether it’s simply having a conversation with a homeless person, donating money, or volunteering at a daycare for the destitute children, these charitable acts can make a huge difference in someone’s life. My service learning experience was an eye opener for me, and it made me realize how privileged and blessed I truly am.…

Mark Tranvik does an amazing job in translating Martin Luther's treatise: The Freedom of a Christian, where Luther contrasts countless religious components - the body (the inner person) and soul (the other person), and faith and works, - these subjects Luther's uses as an attempt to strengthen and return the Christian faith to its true origin. He argues that works have no effect in obtaining righteousness or salvation, instead it is a natural product of humanity. Instead, acknowledging that salvation is and righteousness is solely attainable through faith, which is the only true way humans can reconcile with God. For all rulers, nobles, Roman Catholic officials - all Christians alike- are held to the same standards of spirituality and faith. Luther is successful in his argument of faith over bodies of work to obtain salvation, when he draws support from scripture and historical context of that time.…

The fact that I was able to lend a helping hand to somebody in need made me feel God’s gift of the Holy Spirit inside me. This brings me to my final point, the spiritual aspect of the Academy Oath. Doing good for others, as I did this summer, shines a entirely different light on how fortunate we are to attend such an amazing school and to live the lives that we lead. As students of CBA, we are called upon to do good for our neighbors. It is our moral duty to serve those in need in the name of God.…

As main stream denominations continue to shrink and modern day evangelicalism has morphed into something more politically and conservatively centered, I found “Rescuing Jesus; How People of Color, Women and Queer Christians are Reclaiming Evangelism”, by Deborah Jian Lee, enlightening, profound and hopeful as it centers on new, out of the box ways in which people generally pushed into the margins, are redefining their evangelical Christianity. “Evangelicalism is anything but a monolith; it is a vastly diverse landscape”. Meaning, not all evangelicals are the same and perhaps what we think of them or how we envision them is way off the mark.…

Political actions are arguably motivated by moral beliefs of both the citizens of a state and their elected leaders. Since religion inherently contains a moral and ethical standard for participants to abide by, the use of religious statements by presidents can effectively provide insight into their moral realm. A president that frequently utilizes subtle religious rhetoric is also providing his listeners with an understanding of his moral beliefs. As Jonathan Haidt illustrates in his book The Righteous Mind: Why Good People are Divided by Politics and Religion, people’s decisions and actions are driven by their emotional and moral beliefs subconsciously, and the logic and reasoning people provide to defend these decisions and actions are developed…

That is what makes me proud of myself. I serve others every Sunday, because I volunteer to be a teacher assistant. In the mornings I assist the 5 year old teacher and the first grade, and in the afternoon I assist the 1st grade through 3rd grade teacher. As a volunteer I take kids to the bathroom, and cheek kids into the class, help set up games, get materials for the teacher, and take care of kids on the playground. TITLE The Next Christendom by Philip Jenkins is a non-fiction work about the growth and changing of Christianity from a predominately Western religion to a religion that is becoming more concentrated in the South. In the opening portion of the first chapter, his goal is already made clear when Philip Jenkins states that, “the center of gravity in the Christian world has shifted inexorably away from Europe, Southward to Africa and Latin America, and Eastward, toward Asia,” (1). He goes on to emphasize that this shift will only continue in the coming years, as he expects and has backed his claims with research, the Westerner Christians have slowed their growth while the Southern Christians have been and will continue to grow in number.…

Doing things like baking for my elderly neighbors, or helping them out with any odd jobs they need done may help brighten their day, and, in turn, it makes my day better, knowing that I have helped someone. I am part of the Church of God Women’s Ministries at my local church, and we help those in our community whom are in need of items such as clothing and food. I hope to continue and increase my participation in this group as I grow up. This past year, I was part of the Angels Among Us group at my school, along with others in my grade, in which we would help to provide children in need with clothing items. Volunteering and participating in groups that assist others in need is something that I wish to continue, and I believe that it helps me to become a better person.…

A Christian life is a “life of agapic love and service” that helps “find who you are and who God is by giving yourself away in loving service to others” (Himes 44). In order to live a Christian life and to have a relationship with God, we must live and do things out of our hearts and love. The pure and genuine feelings of our actions will create genuine relationships and actions. In my Christian life, I tend to feel guilty while serving others. For example, I tend to feel sorry about the people I serve in the Tenderloin at the Curry Senior Center and in the Lasallian Vincentian Youth club.…

The many modern currents against Christianism are not the result of the Protestantism, but everything emerged from the Enlightenment, as Edward O’Connor said in The Catholic Vision, “it left a profound impression on our culture that we today are very much its offspring.” No only it was very influential on the Reformation movement, but today we are still bombarded with new forms of it such as humanism (which place man above everything), rationalism (it makes ‘Reason’ the supreme guideline), secularism (placing God or any religious reference away from every human activity), and the development of science and technology (that is the foundation of urbanization and industrialization, and is the foundation of having a centralized and individualistic…
