Christian Service In The Military

In a recent poll conducted by Debate.org, the issue of Christians serving in the military was spilt an even 50%-50%. This issue has gained ground since events like 9/11 as to whether it is a form of Christian duty to serve his or her country in the military. This is a highly controversial issue, and correct Biblical insight is key when dealing with the idea of a Christian serving in the military.
What are the different viewpoints regarding service in the military for a Christian? This is a very difficult subject for some, and both main sides use Scripture to back up their point. One side suggests that Christians can and should join the military, while the other side says that a Christian should not join the military. There is a problem with this line of thinking. When looking at those events of warfare in context, one can find that God specifically used these acts of war to help or hinder Israel. The land of Canaan was an easily invaded land, so God chose this land for his acts of judgement to be apparent to Israel and those countries around Israel. Another problem with this viewpoint is when one compares the type of governments used now and then, there is an important piece of information that supporters of this position fail to leave out. Israel was under a theocracy, which means they were directly ruled by God. The United States of America is obviously not under a theocracy, no matter what Christian fundamentalists want to believe.
