Christian Counselor Beliefs

Decent Essays
I agree with you 100 percent. Christian counselors should not impose their beliefs on their clients. Personally, I feel that clients who are active in their religion have fewer psychological problems than clients who have no religious background. However, as I said above, I do agree with you that Christian counselors should not impose their beliefs or their religious agenda on clients. Although my goal is to become a Christian counselor, I will only integrate religion, spirituality, and Christian faith into the client's treatment if that is the client's desire. If a Christian client does not want to discuss faith and spirituality, I will be respectful of the client's desire to separate religion and therapy. I do not want to harm the client

Discipline is also needed from both the counselor and the client in order for the counseling sessions to work. As a Christian it is our duty according to the Great Commission in Matthew 28:16 to spread the Gospel (ESV). Yet, the American Counseling Association (ACA) Code of Ethics states that counselors are not to impose their values upon their clients (2014). The American Association of Christian Counselors sums it up best by saying that counselors should “expose” not “impose” their beliefs upon clients (2014). This statement gives the Christian counselor permission to share the Gospel in a way that is not intimidating or imposing on the values, rights, or beliefs of others.…

As Christian counselor, I would find CBT to useful in my therapeutic style. Although I am a Christian, I do value and hold a secular view towards mental illness. Some Christian counselors may find that the model of CBT could conflict with their Christian beliefs and be unable to view a person from a model of illness. According to Jones and Butman (2011), they state that “Christian counselors who have clarified their theological foundation could able use cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) as their predominant orienting theoretical approach” (p. 452). They discuss how deficiencies may arise when using CBT in order to heal the disorder or sickness but the Christian counselor should be able to work through them.…
