Church Observation

I associate myself to be Christian, Baptist to be exact. The Church I attended on Sunday the 23rd of October is called St. Michaels Archangel Church in downtown Greenville. Their religion is Coptic Orthodox and in comparison to my own church, it was very different. The Coptic Orthodox Church I attended was very traditional and so much was happening. To compare their Church to my own church, I will briefly describe the procedures and beliefs of my own. There are usually 2-3 services offered every Sunday and sometimes people in church will get together one other day of the week to study the Bible. Each service usually lasted like an hour to an hour and a half. Everyone that comes in seats themselves wherever they would like, whether it be with …show more content…
Usually a priest will lead the service but this was a special occasion because the bishop came. The bishop and the priest split the sections, since he was there. They read mostly from their holy liturgy book and the service was filled with the congregations responses to the priest’s and bishop’s readings from it. The interesting part was that they did not use just one language during the service, they used three; English, Arabic, and Coptic. As they read from the book, they would read it out loud but in more of a singing/chanting way. There was only a brief time period where they would speak without chanting, the rest of the time they would sing. As each section was read, the congregation (that is people in the audience, watching and responding to the priest) would change their position. Sometimes they would sit, other times they would stand, and a few times they would bow their heads as they sit, almost touching their head to the chairs in front of …show more content…
A cloth like napkin is given out to anyone who is taking communion and this is so that no crumbs are dropped. Communion is very sacred and everything needs to be consumed. The wine is also treated the same. After communion, they pray. The bishop walks around after the prayer spraying the congregation with holy water. The water was a bit cold so it surprised me when I was sprinkled with it, but when I looked around many people were smiling and happy to be blessed with the bishops presence and his sprinkling them with holy water. At the very end, everyone lines up to greet the priest but since the bishop was there, we greeted him. When you are in front of him, you take his hand, kissing it and the cross that is in his that same hand. It happened so fast and I did not know I was suppose to kiss the cross that I barely even kissed his hand. He also hands you a gift, and it is different each time but we received a key chain with the bishop on

Spanish Mass at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church 1. What happened during the services? I arrived at the church a few minutes prior to the service and I was greatly surprised by how well attended the service was. There were dozens of families in a spectrum of Sunday best and work-stained denim jeans and nearly every person wore a yellow and white vest with a red cross embroidered on the lapel. At the entrance there was a small dipping well and although there was no water in it at the moment, (most likely due to the sizeable crowd) people still placed their fingers in the dry well and crossed themselves before entering the chapel and before sitting, they would cross themselves again.…

Unlike Catholic service where there would be the Mass and the canonical hours, the Protestants had just the Mass and an evening service and the sermons were done during those times. The Protestant service spoke in a mix of Latin and vernacular; the Catholic service spoke solely in Latin. Next, the Protestants encouraged the congregation to participate in the singing of hymns, not just a selected choir like in the Catholic service. In the Protestants’ service, the congregation sang in chorale style, which was a monophonic rhythmic melody or “religious folk song” that followed an AAB format, with a strophic text. The Protestants used secular music and changed it to be sacred, by changing the text, for their…

The first readings, read in the beginning of the ceremony, were scriptures taken from The Bible. They were read aloud in Hebrew together by the rabbi and the other members. The first One was taken from Micah 7:18-20. It is asking God once again for his love and forgiveness, and and as believers they know he will forgive their sins and cast them into the depths of the sea. The second reading was from Isaiah 11:9.…

The baptism starts off by standing in front of the church door and waiting till the priest has come and asked the god mother and father on behalf of the baby being baptised. The priest will ask the God mother and father “on behalf of the baby (name of the baby) do you reject Satan, do you believe Jesus is the son of God and do you follow Jesus teachings in life (commandments etc). Once that has been done the God Father and God mother will take the baby towards the priest. The God mother will undress the baby and the God father will hand the baby to the priest. The colonial lifestyles was much different as you could imagine, from our lifestyle today they had different rules that dealt with religion, different punishment for crimes, and different ways they treated their sick. Church was really important to the colonist. Everyone went to church no questions asked. Interestingly the colonial Church was segregated as all the boys and men sat on one side and the girls and women would sit on the other side, even the slaves and Native Americans had their own designated spot where they were allowed to sit. Sermons took time lasting from two to five hours.…

I definitely felt a connection with the members because we all shared similar views. There was nothing truly different in our beliefs. The pastor was very relatable in his examples. As a Christian in the twenty-first century, it is important to be open-minded and slow to judge others’ denominations and ideas about what it means to be a disciple of Jesus. Personally, I grew up in a Church of Christ, although after coming to Abilene and visiting other churches I have come to realize that my home church is more like a non-denominational church than a traditional Church of Christ. Upon visiting churches in Abilene, I am a frequent member of The Well, which is a non-denominational church that has many similarities to my church back home. For the church that I visited, I decided to attend an Episcopal church and I attended The Episcopal Church of the Heavenly Rest on February 28th. There were two services, one at 8:00 and one…

Once, the offering plate passing is done the priest and the children stand up and the eucharis begins. As the mass continues, the individuals within the pew, kneel while Father Engram is making the eucharis holy and the bells is rang after each part. The rumor around the church is that the reason why they ring the bells after each part is because it used to be in Latin and those that were not fluent in Latin would get lost. While, the bread and wine are being eaten and drank they sing Bread of Heaven. Once the bread and wine is finished, different individuals get up and speak about events going on in the church and after they finish everyone sings while the priest and children leave.…
