This paper will review “A Right to Treaty Education by Sheila Carr- Stewart as well as looking at a short article simply entitled “Schools” which was written by the Treaty Seven Elders . Both readings were published within five years of each other (The Treaty Seven Elders in 1996 and Carr-Stewarts’s article in 2001). Although both readings are about the educational systems the government of Canada provided for the indigenous people, one article (A Treaty Right to Education) focuses on the historical documents surrounding the issue of foral education provided by the Europeans. Addressing the selected works, an important question has to be asked: Did those that wrote, fought and died for the cause accomplish their aim? Was abolitionism a success? The problem of inequality did not die with the advent of the Civil War and injustice was only partially addressed with the formation of the 13th amendment. It was a small hope that quickly died as the federal government was unwilling to keep their promise of equal protection under the law and much of what the abolitionists fought for had to be fought for in the times to come. Nevertheless, the abolitionists deserve tremendous credit for holding America to its ideals.…

Charles Lane, in his weekly column from the The Washington Post, consistently uses facts and figure, a concerned tone, and a cause and effect expository mode in order to convey his argument about a current issue. However, he uses varying levels of sophistication in the three articles “The GOP’s health-care plan goes in the exact wrong direction,” “Who is to blame for the opioid epidemic,” and “Rahm Emanuel gears up for a modern day- Brown v. Board.” Lane supports each of his arguments with ample quantitative facts and figures.…

It is difficult to empathize with a person if you have not experienced a single day in their lives. For example, how could a white person possibly say they understand what it is like to be black? I feel like many people who were pro slavery lacked this term, which resulted in hatred and racism toward a group of people. The articles written by Mary Kay Ricks and Adam Goodheart portray a period where African Americans were inferior to Whites.…
