Isaiah 53.6 says, “We all like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way.” This verse is a direct representation of the nature of the Israelites and of all sinners. Many times the Israelites turned away from God and sinned. The greatest example being the golden calf forged while Moses was receiving The Ten Commandments. Turning away from God and going their own way was a common pattern for the Israelites, but “the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all” (Isaiah 53.6). The “him” is Jesus who died for all sinners. Another aspect of Israel in the death and resurrection of Jesus is the creation of a new covenant. Jesus sheds his blood to create this new covenant, fulfilling the final part of the covenant with Abraham. The Mosaic covenant provided a great nation, the Davidic covenant produced a great name, but the eternal blessing had not been fulfilled until the new covenant with Jesus. This is the final covenant and promise to the people of Israel, after many previous being broken by the Israelites. Israel’s history involves many cycles of oppression and deliverance.
