Chrisney: A Short Story

Great Essays
Chrisney’s legs weakened. No matter how she tried not to hear, that sexy, baritone, lose your mind, body, and soul and live with the regret voice could not be denied. She cried even harder. She did not want to hear him, feel him. He was the last person she wanted in her face. As she backed away, the firmness of the body she bumped into shocked her. She hadn’t realized anyone else had entered the room.
“I’m sorry,” she said into the air.
Still behind her, the nurse patted Chrisney’s shoulder and joked. “Oh, no, Ms. Courtland, you can’t hurt this burly body of mines.” But, when Chrisney turned, the nurse’s jaws dropped. She threw a hard look in Treyell’s direction. “The hell…?” she said, then turned back to Chrisney, “Ms. Courtland what is going on? You need me to call somebody? ‘Cuz I most certainly will.”
Treyell did his best to keep calm. He was not a man to be judged. He gritted his teeth and said, “I got this.” Stepping around the nurse’s stilled frame, he rushed towards Chrisney, who’d managed to get a good distance away.
Turning to run, Chrisney dropped her favorite designer purse. To hell with it. She was not turning back. Her driving gloves and visitor’s

The sea of wealthy mourners jumped to their feet, most raving as much as others rejoiced. Though an additional five thousand seats had been added to the already massive church along with a state-of-the-art recording studio, bowling alley, skating rink, all new school, daycare, and lots more, the huge, newly constructed Temple of Divine Healing was filled beyond capacity. All who didn’t get there early enough to find a seat were happy to stand along the sides and crowd out the spacious rear areas near the floor to ceiling, glass walls, and

She was pale, trembling, and altogether extremely sickly. “By a snake…” Morgan would have succumbed to her dizziness another time if it had not been for what her new profession was. She had just been recently employed a nurse. Feeling the gravity of the situation yet not quite realizing just how opportune her timing was, she knelt and reassuringly asked the girl if she could get up. A swollen, reddened area on her ankle and a weak shake of her head told Morgan that she could not.…

Spanish Mass at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church 1. What happened during the services? I arrived at the church a few minutes prior to the service and I was greatly surprised by how well attended the service was. There were dozens of families in a spectrum of Sunday best and work-stained denim jeans and nearly every person wore a yellow and white vest with a red cross embroidered on the lapel. At the entrance there was a small dipping well and although there was no water in it at the moment, (most likely due to the sizeable crowd) people still placed their fingers in the dry well and crossed themselves before entering the chapel and before sitting, they would cross themselves again.…

À suivre, pompous boy.” Lucille walked towards Nurse 34 and then past her back to the white room with nothing but faded black to keep her company. As the sun set, Lucille ran her slender fingers up and down the hair on her leg and mulled over the newest member of the west wing; his differences to the other patients who were just lambs now. She laid down on her back and closed her eyes knowing a nurse or doctor would be in to check on her and put her in a medical coma if she weren’t already sleeping.…

and she thought at this moment that she couldn’t ever live without him. Taylor knew that she had to profess her feelings towards Estevan before never seeing him again. For example, Taylor cried, “Estevan, I know it doesn't do any good to say things like this, but I don’t want to lose you. I never lost anybody I loved, and I think I don’t know how to (Pg: 219).” Taylor felt empty and her heart was pierced, but walking away she knew that Estevan knew her feelings for him.…

A loud ring echoed throughout the house and cleared my hazy mind as I lay sprawled out on the couch. My thoughts slowly cleared and I remembered the messages from my phone. Yet another ring awakened me as I realized I had invited company. “Here” the text read. My plans for the night hit me like a sledgehammer to a nail and I sprang from the couch to grab the door.…

While I wrote about Cuban Catholicism for my encyclopedia-style summary, there are not any specifically Cuban churches existing in Minnesota. Because of this, I decided that the next closest thing would be to visit a Spanish-language Catholic mass. I visited St. Odilia Catholic Church in Shoreview, Minnesota. While St. Odilia is not an exclusively Hispanic community, they do offer a Spanish mass every Sunday afternoon. There is a relatively large Hispanic community in Roseville, Shoreview, Arden Hills, and the surrounding areas which attend the mass.…

The Rothko Chapel, located in Houston, Texas, presents a deceptively simple exterior. The ungarnished brick walls lack intrigue or grandeur, the doorway is simply a means of entrance rather than a spectacle, yet over 55,000 visitors are drawn to the location every year (YouTube). The sanctuary inside is just as plain, aside from fourteen imposing murals created by the chapel’s namesake, Mark Rothko. They adorn bare walls, constantly shifting appearance with the light cast from the chapel’s skylight (Dowell). They seem to be the only lively aspects of an otherwise static place.…

Had been plotting, planning; and agonizing. She was already well aware of the consequence her actions would lead to, but after the event that had been weighing on her shoulders for years on end, the few seconds of relief that she would finally have after the deed was done would be all worth it.…

It was ghost quiet except for the rhythmic dripping from these water gutters. The moonlight, like a parching owl beheld steadily on a branch was witnessing a devastating catastrophe. Three men, dressed in nearly identical black uniforms stood in a semicircle just around the edge of the street. Breaking the harmonic silence was a rapid panting, and occasion screech of a girl. There was already a smoking flame was crawling onto her lungs and slowly eating into her throat from the previous escaping of those men.…

“Where do we even walk in? It must be closed.” “No, it’s open, the entrance is…” My sister and I stared at the ten-foot high, double, wooden doors, there are no signs posted, but we still reached for the handles and pulled open. We strolled into the unknown; into Fountain Street Church. I was expecting the work from ArtPrize to be the main attraction in this one hundred year old building, but was easily distracted by the beauty of the architecture within Fountain Street Church. This masterpiece of a structure is far from just a venue for ArtPrize, Grand Rapid’s beloved art celebration and competition, but it is a place where civilians have gathered for many generations to celebrate faith.…

So I backed down and put a scarf over my head, and I walked into the mosque that stood before me. As I looked around all I could see were people and golden walls. My jaw dropped open as I turned around only to see more and more gold walls and mosaics that went from the ground to the ceiling. I was so fascinated by everything around me that I almost stepped on a person who was kneeling on the ground towards the front of the mosque. This person was praying in the middle of a crowded mosque filled with tourists, but he didn’t care.…
