Why Is Chris Mccandless Suicidal

Chris McCandless was a person who left one life and entirely started a new one. He believed in many ideas the Transcendentalists believed in, and lived his life based on that. Chris McCandless was an adventurer who wanted more from life than society gave him. He was an idealist who did what he always wanted to do, made mistakes and rejected personal relationships. Some may say Chris McCandless was simply suicidal, or just plain stupid. The book “Into The Wild” by Jon Krakauer has a passage on 198 that states “Many Alaskans have wondered why McCandless didn’t start a forest fire at this point, as a distress signal.” This may support the theory that McCandless was just suicidal, and he knew he could start a fire but didn’t because he was finally …show more content…
“It would be suicidal; it was simply not an option(Krakauer 170).” This line alone says how McCandless was not suicidal. He recognized a situation that could’ve killed him and didn’t use it. Furthermore, if McCandless really was suicidal, he had plenty of opportunities to kill himself that would’ve been much easier and quicker than the way he died. He had a gun on his person which he very easily could’ve used. Chris McCandless was not suicidal. Chris McCandless was a simple person, who denied societal norms, wanted more from life, and had his own idea of what society should be. The society he lived in did not provide him with this, so he left and created his own society full of adventure and what he wanted. The same quote that was used earlier also applies here. “Many Alaskans have wondered why, in his desperation, McCandless didn’t start a forest fire at this point, as a distress signal(Krakauer 198).” McCandless left his former life and changed his name to create his own society. He wanted to be completely away from other people and live off the land of the Alaskan wilderness for a while. As he had already done so for around 2 months thus far, why would he suddenly decide that he should send a distress signal? It doesn’t fit with his philosophy of life, which is why he likely didn’t send a distress signal. He must’ve …show more content…
He had a troubled life that made him do this, and that made him crave more than he had in life. Chris McCandless had a father who was married to, and still having children with, his first wife when he was conceived and birthed. Because of how this played out, Chris’s mother often blamed him for the relationship with his father. A quote from his sister, Carine McCandless on Adam Read’s website reads “I remember Chris being consistently told through our mother’s tears that the family struggles began with his birth when she became “stuck” with our dad.” This quote shows the struggle Chris always had in his life, and shows part of the reason he may want to sever all personal relationships. As a cause of all the negativity his mother placed upon him, he didn’t feel he needed personal relationships. Furthermore, Chris had issues with his father past his bigamy. An article by Eric Johnson, entitled ‘Into the Wild’ Chris McCandless’ Sister Says He Was Determined to Cut Ties with Parents, talks about how Chris’ father was abusive to Chris’ mother, his first wife and Chris himself. Walt McCandless was abusive to the point his first wife filed for a restraining order against him as a cause of it. Having a physically abusive parent on top of an emotionally manipulative and abusive parent was enough to make Chris McCandless decide he didn’t want to have any personal relationships by choice, as the ones

Due to the means of his death, it would be more appropriate to call it “untimely,” as there was in fact some point to his wandering off. One of the people in which Krakauer interrogated regarding McCandless stated that “He intended to spend the rest of his life ‘communing with nature’” (72). This reason, while falling into the aforementioned clich, provides insight to his original intent. McCandless was not just some kid who wandered into the winter for the sake of it; he put himself into that position so he could learn from it. As for the lack of humility, he had to have enough humbleness to…

While reading the Time magazine article “Why the Teen Brain is Drawn To Risk”, I noticed the connections between the article and the character Chris McCandless from the book Into The Wild by author Jon Krakauer. I don't agree with the article when it says that risk taking occurs when teens are unaware of the dangers involved. Chris McCandless is a good example, because he knew the risks behind his venture into the great unknown. He knew what could go terribly wrong along the way, but still decided to take the risk. Teenagers take these risks because they don't have any responsibility to keep them accountable for their actions.…

You're Missing Something Christopher McCandless is a man who had everything and gave it up because he was annoyed with the world and he wanted to escape. The drastic decision he made captivated many, especially the author Jon Krakauer because he had a similar experience and he could relate to McCandless's disappointments. Jan's review is based on the Outside Magazine article that was written by Krakauer describing McCandless's journey. To some McCandless' story is just a tale of nature's harsh reality, but for others they view him as a heroic figure. Many criticize him for venturing unprepared into the Alaskan wilderness and for inspiring others to do the same.…
