McCandless would chronicle his adventures to Wayne Westerberg and citizens in Carthage. He left an impression on Wayne’s significant other, Gail Borah. Borah later recounts “Alex(McCandless) talked a lot when we got together, serious stuff, like he was baring his soul, kind of”(p63). She states that “something was gnawing at him”(p63) and that there was something amiss. To Wayne and the others, all they saw was an eccentric young man who was a hard worker with a passion for adventure. In a way, when people interacted with McCandless and registered his passion and adventure it reminded them of a simpler time when they were younger with a sense of exploration and never capitalized on it. Additionally, when Wayne introduced McCandless to his mother who was never known for enjoying the company of Wayne’s employees, the two clicked immediately and Wayne recalls “The two of ‘em talked nonstop for five hours”(p67).
