Chris McCandless set out on an adventure in the wilderness of Alaska with hardly any supplies.“Alex admitted that the only food in his pack was a ten-pound bag of rice. His gear seemed exceedingly minimal for the harsh conditions of the interior, which in April still lay buried under the winter snowpack”(5). McCandless seemed to be smart but it was his naivety and stubbornness that led to his death. He thought he knew the way of things, however he had deeper research that should’ve been done before going on such a dangerous adventure.

He somehow managed to kill a moose with the only gun he brought,semiautomatic .22-caliber Remington rifle. This would’ve been great if he would’ve known how to preserve all the meat from his kill. McCandless was preserving meat the way a hunter in South Dakota told him to. Although he thought he knew how to successfully preserve the meat, the way to preserve meat in Alaska is way different than it is in South Dakota. His naiveness wasted all the moose meat was lucky to have which left him in devastation. “‘Don’t know, looks like disaster. I now wish I had never shot the moose. One of the greatest tragedies of my life’”(167). This misfortune led Chris to stop eating meat and eat a plant based diet.
