He somehow managed to kill a moose with the only gun he brought,semiautomatic .22-caliber Remington rifle. This would’ve been great if he would’ve known how to preserve all the meat from his kill. McCandless was preserving meat the way a hunter in South Dakota told him to. Although he thought he knew how to successfully preserve the meat, the way to preserve meat in Alaska is way different than it is in South Dakota.
