According to the UAF, the main things you will need to survive the alaskan wilderness is food, water, oxygen, and shelter/warmth. But Chris Mccandless had hardly any food or clothing to keep warm, which brings me to ponder why he would run away from the complete life he already had. But after I learned about Chris’ life back in El Segundo, California, I understood why he escaped to his only home he ever knew, the wilderness. In Jon Krakauer’s book “Into The Wild”, Chris Mccandless struggled to figure out his self-meaning and died in isolation in the wilderness, and I completely support his decision. “At long last he was unencumbered, emancipated from the stifling world of his parents and peers, a world of abstraction and security and material…

Chris McCandless was also an educated young man, though he had a different perspective and goal. He wanted to find himself by going to live in Alaska’s wilderness, which he did. Adam Shepard was able to write about his experience and publish a book which many have now read. Chris McCandless however, did not live to write a book about his experience, though he did write in a journal throughout his journey which was later on discovered and created into a book.…

He determined that he would travel to Alaska, get further away from it all, and face nature at its finest. He traveled exceptionally light. He didn?t take much, a parka, a small rifle, some boots, a few clothes, a ten pound bag of rice, books, and little else. ? The heaviest item in McCandless?s half-full backpack was his library: nine or ten paperbound books.…

When thinking about Chris McCandless people tend to think differently of him. A majority would call him crazy and stupid for not supplying himself with more items to bring along to the Alaskan wilderness. There were others who think he was sane and was just trying to prove himself or to the world who he was and what he can do. Even Jon Krakauer mentions in his book that he didn’t know who Chris Mccandless really was, that it was hard to put a finger on it, but he knew he was sane to say the least and not an outcast. To me, I think that Chris was just a guy who had “radical” ideas-- an idealist with very progressive ideas-- and instead of pushing his thoughts to the side like most people.…

He traveled everywhere; from South Dakota to Mexico, and all the way up to Oregon. Chris McCandless’s story is one of the most well-known adventure stories in North America. Chris McCandless was an amazing and successful adventurer. He lasted two years traveling all over only by himself, with nothing but the clothes on his back and the help of others who gave him jobs for money to survive.…

Chris McCandless set out on an adventure in the wilderness of Alaska with hardly any supplies. “Alex admitted that the only food in his pack was a ten-pound bag of rice. His gear seemed exceedingly minimal for the harsh conditions of the interior, which in April still lay buried under the winter snowpack”(5). McCandless seemed to be smart but it was his naivety and stubbornness that led to his death. He thought he knew the way of things, however he had deeper research that should’ve been done before going on such a dangerous adventure.…

Not only was Chris a particularly unique individual, he was also generous as well. Throughout the course of his journey, he made pit stops all over the United States, visiting California, Oregon, Washington, Colorado, and Nevada before finally setting his eyes on the Northwest. On the road to Alaska, he met many people who he became friends with and encouraged them to be courageous and step out into the wild to experience joy. The most significant example of Chris transforming someone’s life was none other than Ronald Franz. In a letter to Ronald, Chris wrote:…

Christopher Johnson McCandless went on a grand adventure, but did not come back to regale the experiences he had to his friends and family. His death was the talk of the nation for a short while, so there are many opinions about Chris’s actions. Some think he just had to be insane to do what he did. Others put him up on a pedestal, and admire him for his courage. My opinion is that Chris was not crazy, he was just a stupid, inexperienced, arrogant boy who wanted to prove he could survive on his own in the wild.…

His actions were not honorable and his decisions were those of a child. As a young headstrong man filled with hubris, he entered the harsh bush with little preparation. Running away from civilization, McCandless was like many other young men and women who travel to Alaska. He was disoriented, exasperated with societal prospects, probing for an adventure and a peregrination that would provide enlightenment.. An edifier from the Arctic circle expressed his noetic conceptions on McCandless, “I’ve run into several McCandless types out in the country… idealistic, energetic young guys who overestimated themselves, underestimated the country, and ended up in trouble.…

Hello Moose Hunters, Hope you are having a lovely cold, snowy, and wintery day. Now, you may be wondering why I am standing up in front of you about to talk about Chris McCandless and his death, but I would like to inform you that after weeks of research, I am proud to share my well developed ideas regarding McCandless’s trip. By reading Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer, Civil Disobedience and Walking by Thoreau, Self Reliance by Emerson, and various other texts from newspapers such as the New York Times, I have enriched my knowledge in the field of transcendentalism and in the tragic death of McCandless. I strive to settle the dispute on whether or not McCandless’s journey was “justified.”…

In countless instances, Chris expressed his distaste for the conformity of a society, as he saw with his own family, in which one’s life is a routine that consists of waking up, going to work, coming home to family, going to sleep, and repeating it for the rest of one’s life. McCandless set out into the world after college not to appreciate nature specifically, but the experiences of the world, as he described, “’It is the experiences, the memories, the great triumphant joy of living to the fullest extent in which real meaning is found.’” (27) Chris strived for a daily sense of adventure, an escape from the limitations of community, as Andy, a high school friend of McCandless, explained, “[Chris] was born into the wrong century. He was looking for more adventure and freedom than today’s society gives people.” (119) Another aspect that was unpractical of Chris, that led to his unfortunate death in Alaska, was his seclusion and his desire to be alone.…

Chris McCandless died alone in the Alaskan wild while living completely off of the land. “Some readers admired the boy immensely for his courage and noble ideals:” while “: others fulminated that he was a reckless idiot, a wacko, a narcissist who perished out of arrogance and stupidity-and was undeserving of the considerable media attention he received” (Krakauer xi). These quotes represent the feelings of many who read Into The Wild, but most people ignore the important aspects of Chris McCandless’ personality and his self imposed purpose. McCandless was a kind, intelligent and free-spirited young man who may not have been completely prepared for his journey, he was able to accept death in the end, knowing that he lived a life that too…

Krakauer portrays McCandless as caring person who does not ignore the people encountered in his expedition. While hitchhiking for food and water, Krakauer meets a retired army veteran name Ronald Franz. For unintended purpose McCandless was travelled with Franz. After getting in his own way he does not forget Franz. On account of remembering Franz, Krakauer writes, “On February 19, McCandless called Franz, collect, to wish him a happy eighty-first birthday” ( Krakauer 53).…
