McCandless’ Attitude Towards Flawed Society.

McCandless’ attitude towards a flawed society is prevalent throughout the novel. McCandless is passionate about his beliefs, and he is a big dreamer. Once he puts his mind to something, he will not be stopped. McCandless could be considered somewhat stubborn based on the choices he makes throughout the novel. One example is how he went into Alaska with no training or supplies and expected to survive for a long period of time. After reading the novel, the reader can infer that one reason McCandless set off to Alaska was to leave society behind. McCandless did not like the society he lived in, so what better way to not be a part of it then to just leave it? McCandless did not like materialistic things.

If one knows this about Chris, it may be hard to understand why he left his life behind, even though it was seemingly a good life. Coming from a wealthy family in today's society is so incredibly important. Even when the novel was written, I’m sure it was still important back then. People may have thought McCandless was just not right in the head to leave everything behind to travel to Alaska. I think people may have just been thinking, why? Why would he do this? Who was he inspired by? McCandless was inspired by the transcendentalist authors and supporters, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, and Jack London. The transcendentalist point of view is not super common in the world. Without knowing this point of view, it would be hard for society to understand the morals of Chris and why he did what he did. Society makes a point for life to be fair and for everyone to be treated the same. Chris went against what society wanted him to do and followed his own path. Society sets the standards for living a perfect life with no uniqueness. Chris does not believe in this, and he wants to do what he wants to do. Society may not have liked him for this because he does not follow what everyone else feels like they have to follow. Chris was not admirable to society, he did not listen to others when people tried to help him. People tried to tell him he was not prepared or ready to go into the wild, but he …show more content…
Krakauer admires McCandless for how well he thought of his trip to Alaska. Other people may not have viewed it like this, but Krakauer always looked on the bright side when it came to Chris. He thought what Chris did was amazing and necessary for him to follow his dreams, after learning more about Krakauer. Others viewed McCandless as crazy and, in some cases, suicidal. But Krakauer’s mission was to prove these people wrong, and that's what he did. Krakauer rules out suicide as the cause of death, instead he thinks it was an accident. Chris was already sick and starving, one bad food and that was the end of McCandless. This shows that Krakauer deeply cared for Chris, even without knowing him. The life story of McCandless also fits some of the characteristics of Krakauer's life. This made it easier for Krakauer to put himself in the shoes of McCandless. Similarly, both McCandless and Krakuer had bad relationships with their father. Krakauer viewed himself nearly the same as Chris in certain ways. The author states, “My father was a volatile, extremely complicated person, possessed of a bash demeanor that masked his insecurities.”(Page 147) Krakauer's father had very high expectations of him. He wanted Krakauer to do very specific things in his life. This is related to Chris McCandless because he did not follow a specific path. Chris never wanted

Many people viewed Chris McCandless from different perspectives, and came to several conclusions about this young man.
