He was infatuated by the books he read and used this as a form of escapism as do many other bookworms. The author’s real life habits had not occurred to chris at all, because they do not pertain to the story.
McCandless had a unique relationship with his family, his father being the most influential to him. Chris had been bred from a young age to conform to the average American’s lifestyle and began to disagree with his parents because of it. After a while, this mediocre life Chris’s parents forced upon him began to push him away more, resulting in a unhealthy relationship with his parents. When Chris’s face would begin to ‘darken with anger’ he would remember all of the bad times when he was pushed into a lifestyle that disagreed with his very nature.
Chris has been pushed past the breaking point in his relationship with his parents. Their way of loving him was to feed him items of affection rather than showing emotion. He has felt abandoned all of his life due to his families selfish needs and knows that he will never be happy unless he begins to direct his own life. These new objects are credited to the work provided by people such as programmers, designers, and manufacturers to name a few. With advancements in technology many other differences are evident like modern medicine. Many years ago, doctors believed that leeches could be used to suck out poisons in affected people. With new medical knowledge, we know that leeches are parasites that suck blood benefitting themselves while harming their host. Aside from horror stories about old medicine, cultural advancements have also come a long way. New social and economic beliefs have become widespread and are far different from what used to be socially acceptable when older generations were young. After advancements from a cultural standpoint, comes all the new creative ideas brought by newer generations. The internet is a prime example of a new form of thinking.
