Both McCandless and Shepard had a ultimate purpose self-reliance and the American dream. In McCandless’s story the audience learned how he enjoyed breaking boundaries by “live off the land”(Krakauer 1) and what to be independent from parents and materialistic elements. In Shepard’s story he too has a purpose. Shepard wanted to refute the theory of a broken American dream, proving naysayers like Ehrenreich wrong.
