Imagine leaving a simple comfortable life behind to go live out in the snow. Now, on top of being completely alone imagine having little knowledge on how to survive. Sound fun? Well, this is exactly what Chris McCandless did. McCandless traveled into Alaska with rice and a small amount of knowledge on poisonous berries, told from the story. Although Chris tried to act as though he was doing something great he actually was causing harm to himself and everyone he actually cared about. Chris McCandless’s adventure was complete nonsense because he was unprepared, he had no knowledge on how to truly survive in the wild, and he left his life behind for an awful reason. McCandless was a lost teenager that should have gotten help rather than trying to fix himself in the wild.
The story starts off with a man with the name of Jim Gallien just driving. He spots a young hitchhiker (Chris McCandless) and tell the boy to hop in. Jim says “He wasn’t carrying anywhere near as much food and gear as you’d expect a guy to be carrying for that kind of trip” (Krakauer 4). A local man just look at McCandless and can already tell that he is unprepared for his journey. Jim actually sympathized the boy and gave him an old pair of boots that were in his truck and one of his sandwiches (Krakauer 7). He also gave the boy his number saying “If you make it out alive, give me a call…” (Krakauer 7). McCandless starts off his journey already with a little help because he was unprepared.
