The American Dream is a dream that many Americans strive for. The freedom in which includes the opportunity for prosperity and success, as well as an upward social mobility for the family and children, achieved through hard work, with few barriers. The Pursuit of Happiness, is a book written by the multi-millionaire Chris Gardner. Gardner was not born into nobility. He battled through many obstacles to become the man he is today. His book also inspired Gabriele Muccino to direct a movie about his life, starring Will Smith. Chris Gardner had many hurdles to overcome before his great success which included sacrifice, taking risks and working hard.

He sacrificed comfort, decent living conditions and quality time with his son. He took risks by becoming a stockbroker with little money to his name, enlisting in the navy fresh outta high school and never giving up on his dream. Lastly, he worked hard for what he earned. He compartmentalized his terrible childhood, he stayed motivated and maintained a positive attitude, he grew up without a father and was in and out of foster care. Throughout all these obstacles Chris Gardner managed to become a motivational speaker, a stockbroker, and CEO of a multi-million dollar company.
