The Centre Block is mostly modern Gothic Revival, while the East and West Blocks are Victorian High Gothic. You can see the Gothic style in elements of the building such as the pointed arches, lancet windows and tracery, spires with crockets, and the stonework. When the buildings were rebuilt after the fire, the new architects’, John A. Pearson and Jean-Omer Marchand, proposal kept many of the original elements but used more modern materials and planning. They used a symmetrical plan with major and minor corridors that was laid out according to the architectural style of Beaux-Arts. An example of this is the Centre Block’s main axis corridor linking the Parliamentary Library with the main public entrance.…

I think that Krakauer’s presence in the text is beneficial to the readers. His comments give the readers another perspective on Chris McCandless’s journey. The additional opinions help the reader better understand why Chris might have done what he did and connect with the story on a deeper level. Krauknaur feels a connection to McCandless as they both had adventurous goals and acted upon them. Krakauer, “never had any doubt that climbing the Devils Thumb would transform [his] life” (135).…

When thinking about Chris McCandless people tend to think differently of him. A majority would call him crazy and stupid for not supplying himself with more items to bring along to the Alaskan wilderness. There were others who think he was sane and was just trying to prove himself or to the world who he was and what he can do. Even Jon Krakauer mentions in his book that he didn’t know who Chris Mccandless really was, that it was hard to put a finger on it, but he knew he was sane to say the least and not an outcast. To me, I think that Chris was just a guy who had “radical” ideas-- an idealist with very progressive ideas-- and instead of pushing his thoughts to the side like most people.…

The façade is constructed entirely of limestone.…

Mohammed Waseem Chiraagh 1380983 ARCH 6313 - Critical Studies 3 Major Assignment Traditionally as humans, when critiquing a building our thoughts are based on the buildings form as a whole, one defined object or boundary made up of different components which creates the overall look, structure and how it fits into the contextual surroundings. In the text “Why Architecture Matters” Paul Goldberger, shows that not only the outer boundary or façade is important but that there is another dimension which is often open to wider interpretation and often disregarded when thinking about a building. This being the interior space within these boundaries, the interior of the building says a lot more than its exterior, as it defines the space, the light and the mood it creates.…
