Personal Narrative: My Interview With A Sportsperson

Superior Essays
Choosing the person to interview for this assignment was difficult at first, trying to determine which sport and how to contact that person. I first started with the Toledo Mud Hens, but didn’t receive any call backs. I also contacted the Lansing Lugnuts and the West Michigan White Caps and again no call backs. So I looked up minor league baseball teams and the name El Paso Chihuahuas caught my attention. Looking up their front office staff on their website I seen that Angela Olivas is the Director, Marketing and Communications for the team. So I decided to contact her and was able to talk to her first hand the moment I called. Being that she is women and of Mexican descent I was very excited to have her as my interviewee to get her insight. …show more content…
The first initial plan was to bring back life to El Paso, the owners wanted to bring family fun affordable entertainment. They wanted to improve the quality of life that the experience was more than baseball. Also before the team name was revealed the fans got to choose out of 5 mascots and vote for their favorite, they put out teasers of each one on TV and online. The final decision was the Chihuahua whose name is Chico, which brings a fun atmosphere to the game. Angela mentioned that during one of the games a group of high school kids, came up with the slogan “Fear the Ears.”
The owners had a vison, position, and purpose when deciding to create a team in El Paso. The owners probably developed a SWOT Analysis to see what internal and external factors the team could bring to the town of El Paso. Getting the fans involved in the naming of the team was a big step and great marketing strategy. The citizens of El Paso probably feel part of the team because they were part of the naming process.

The team has different ways of entertaining fans by video board contest, on the field MC and having theme nights. To close out the interview I asked Angela about doing a job shadow with her during Adrian College’s Spring break. She said sure and for me to get a hold of her in the end of January to discuss further details about it she was open for doing 2-3 days. Doing the job shadow will benefit me on knowing the inside perspective of the sport industry also this will be a great networking contact for me as well, for the future.
Everything that we have been learning in class has been used in Angela’s career from getting butts in seats to selling techniques and knowing your demographic. This interview has taught me how to apply what I learn in class to real life situations and seeing it all come together step by step. This also taught me how to talk to someone is this field and how to network myself and a great career opportunity by learning how to network myself. I’m sure that Angela is one of many contacts that I will have in my career and as they say it’s not what you know it’s who you

Recently, there has been a lot of talk surrounding the name of the football team representing the District of Columbia. In addition, the National Congress of American Indians deems it “harmful”. Though some Indian Americans view the name and logo of the team as an achievement or are proud of it, many find it insulting and demeaning. As an owner it makes sense to go against changing the name since it’s estimated to cost around twenty million dollars. As an owner, I would not want to spend these types of funds on something because it hurt someone’s feelings.…

Felicia Rollberg November 29th 2015 Conflict Paper Washington Redskin Name Conflict What is in a name? A name can define who we believe we are, it can give us something to fight for, and it can unite people together. For the National Football League’s Washington Redskins they will have to fight for their name if they aim to keep it. It will not be a fight easily won however as the Oneida Indian Nation, and the National Congress of American Indians as well as several tribes across the country are doing all they can to force a name change on the grounds that the name is a racial slur and is highly offensive to the Native American people.…

Similarly Native Americans feel as by using there name as a mascot, they are being discriminated. People are using their culture as a way to represent their football team, which makes the them feel like people are using their culture as a joke. Comparatively, In the piece, “How to Tame a Wild Tongue”, Gloria Anzaldua illustrates, “I remember being caught speaking Spanish at recess-that was good for three licks on the knuckles with a sharp ruler. I remember being sent to the corner of the classroom for “talking back” to Anglo teacher when I was trying to do was tell her how to pronounce my name. “If you want to be American, speak ‘American.’…

During one of the games the Braves fans did the tomahawk chop and screamed indian chants throughout the game. And the Indians fans proudly waved fake tomahawks and covered their faces in paint. This caused a revolt; native american activists waited outside the stadium with signs and protested the inappropriate use of their symbols. People should not be getting mad about native american mascots or names, it is doing no harm to anyone and anything. The main reason for symbols is to bring a community closer together.…

The Indian Mascot When one thinks about Native Americans or Indians, they used to think about the first Thanksgiving, wars with cowboys, or even the movie Pocahontas. Today when one hears the word Native American, they think of controversial topics about the North Dakota oil pipeline, the drop out rates in Native schools, and of course whether or not the Indian mascot should be allowed. It all started back in 1912, when baseball’s Boston Braves adopted their team name.…

I do think that teams should have to change their name if it is disrespectful to other teams or players. But I think it should be something a little more disrespectful, like I don't see anything wrong with the team name redskins. The brownes I would have a problem with or the twinkies especially little eyes that would be very racist well I think so anyway. Teams should not have these kind of names to begin with. Now after they made it their team name you have a problem.…

They consistently show a lack of respect and care for the people they base their team’s main imagery off of. The entire team’s name is based off the color of a race’s skin and they try to deem it okay because they got people to participate in a half time show four decades ago. The name and the efforts to keep it show a lack of connection with the times. It might have been okay so many years ago to use this team name, but nowadays it is about respecting everybody. This logo and team name completely miss the mark on that.…
