Choosing A Place Where I Choose

A famed Irish poet by the name of W.B. Yeats once said that, “Education is not the filling of a pail, but rather the lighting of a fire.” Deciding my life’s course at such a young age is a daunting expectation, but the first step is choosing where I will be taught how to work through my new life. Choosing this place, like W.B. Yeats said, shouldn’t be finding a place to goof off and just memorizing information, but it should be a place where I will gain a spark of knowledge that will cause me to innovate and change the world instead of just dragging my feet through it all. I, however, am having troubles deciding on which creativity inducing place I must choose. The two universities that I am having trouble choosing between are New York University in New York City and The University of Southern California in Los Angeles. My desires of where I should go seem to be leaning more towards USC right now and not as much towards New York University based upon their costs of living, majors they provide, and overall atmosphere of the location itself.
The University of Southern California’s school tuition prices are expensive, but their non-academic student plans make things a lot cheaper that are required on a day to day basis. Total tuition costs at USC usually run for about

USC offers tons of extracurriculars for it’s students to participate in with clubs and social organizations like ROTC and College Quidditch (“University of Southern California”). There is also a really great football team at USC which allows for more fun outside of class. For more academic fun, USC has a motion capture lab which really interests me for both the cinema and game development majors I would like to pursue (“University of Southern California”). Finally, the great weather of California makes everyday better and the city itself offers thousands of things to do to keep me intrigued with the

On Thursday, October 12th, I took the opportunity to help at the Agua Caliente Casino’s College Fair event, with the intention that I would also see the schools I intend to apply. While at the event, I saw many colleges and universities with their luring stands’ free candies, pens, and informational brochures. Overall, the schools all had something great to offer; whether it was the small class sizes or amazing student abroad programs. Although universities from as far as Hawaii to Oregon may have grabbed my attention – because of its stunning scenery and programs – I restricted my preferences to California schools. In particular, my eyes lit up when I saw UC Irvine, UC Riverside, CSU Channel Islands, – given that I’ve seen some of these see…

When I moved to California two years ago, I found a great room for rent with awesome roommates. They were all college graduates and very articulate and knew so much whether it was to do with history, or knowing their way around the garden. Baca and Malcolm X both inspired while in prison to become articulate, because they wanted to be heard and feel free. Like Malcolm X being inspired by his fellow inmate named Bimbi, by the way he would attract people’s attention just by the way he spoke, and having so much knowledge to share, I was inspired by these beautiful young people who could make any topic they spoke about sound interesting. At this time in my life I decided I should apply for college and begin with a new outlook on education.…

Is college your next step after high school? Many students and teachers believe that, but what they don’t know is that many college students have significant debt. While at a Community College, I have had time to grow and mature into a finer young adult than I came out of High School. I learned to live on my own and take care of myself, while continuing to acquire training and education. It was also a time I took to figure who I am and who I want to be. With that in mind, I have found that I desire to continue growing at a different institution. While I have learned a significant amount of things in my current college and enjoyed every minute of it, I will be graduating from its program soon and wish to explore opportunities elsewhere.…

The University of Southern California is a top notch facility with premier applicants from every corner of the world, each with something that is essential to understanding them. As for myself, I feel as if my story would not be complete without telling the tale of my rural upbringing. Coming from a modest town of 2,144 residents in northwest Indiana, my day to day experiences have been a lot different than those I would encounter in Los Angeles, California. While going from being surrounded by people who ride their donkeys to school to being surrounded by people who ride their long boards to school would be quite a culture shock, it is exactly the type of adjustment I need to transition into my adult life. Although the environment I grew…

My parents assembled around me as I opened the letter, from the University that I have habitually desired to attend, only to observe my smile decline as I informed them that my decision had been deferred. The paper states, “If UNCW is your first choice, you may send us a letter, or email expressing your interest. We will add this to your file.”…
