Choosing a major is one of the most important parts of being in college. A major is a specialized area of study. Along with the general classes each college requires students to take, there is a group of courses in that chosen subject that must be completed to be awarded a degree in that major. (princeton) Examples of a few include chemistry, mathematics, medicine, or engineering. While some students go into college already certain on what they would like to study, a majority find this decision to be very difficult and stressful. “About 80 percent of students in the United States end up changing their major at least once”, according to the National Center for Education Statistics. With college applications approaching, you want to know you are major so you know what colleges will be best for you based off their programs. Colleges offer more than a few majors to choose from so it is vital you select the one that works flawlessly for you. When electing your major, there are some significant things to take into consideration that can influence your decision. A couple of the important things include what you ultimately plan to do and your genuine interest in the major. Making sure you do something you like and have genuine interest in is very beneficial in the long run when thinking of a career. You become more encouraged and productive when doing something that you like rather than doing something just for the potential income. If the subject matter that you are studying is something you love and have interest in; you become more engaged in class and this could even lead to better grades. Sometimes this idea scares students because the demand for certain career fields are low. However, some of the skills taught within those major or career fields can be used for other jobs and can very valuable for companies.
As a kid growing up, everyone always had a dream job that they desired to be when they grew up. Though that job may have altered since you were six years old, it is still very relevant when selecting your major now. You want to pick a major that will assist in preparing you for a certain job or career you want after college. This factor takes some time, nevertheless.
