Why High School Students Go To College

Choosing a college is one of the many lifetime goals for a young adult. It is a milestone that most young adults accomplish. Graduating from High School is a pretty eccentric feeling but what happens after that? Some people do not do anything and acquire a job as soon as they graduate. Only about 1% joins the military. However the majority of people who graduate from High School go to college. The reason for that is because most individual’s mental point of view for what kids do after High School is go to college. Some students however feel as if it’s a mystery as to what to do to get into college. One survey that involved one point eight million students who partook in the ACT, had a percentage of only 26% who met college standards for all four subjects including reading, mathematics, science, and English (U.S. News, 2016). That is just from an academic standpoint. Some schools have classes that help prepare you for what needs to be done in order to get into college meanwhile others do not. There are many reasons as to why High School does not prepare a student. One of the reasons is that the scheduling difference between High School and college is immensely different (Grant Wiggins 2015). In college there is no requirement for a student to be in a classroom for an hour at a time, six hours a day, five days a week. Instead the student gets class times based on the students schedule and the major that was chosen to partake in. However some students feel as if they will not be prepared even with classes or courses and that is why the student or students do not attend. Some of the students do not attend due to the parents of said students feeling as if their children are not ready and as the old saying goes, “baby” them. The main reason is money issues. High School’s not usually give a student a great incentive to go. Most days’ kids are lazy and feel as if going to an extra four years of school is not worth the effort. The schools who do have college preparedness classes make college seem like a burden and do not usually give the pros and cons of going. However schools that offer AP classes or classes that allow the student to actually travel to a college to attend a course give an idea of what it is like to attend college before the student even joins. This in turn allows the student to mentally prepare for what is to come if they were to join
