Statement Of Purpose: A Career As An Anesthesiologist

An important factor in deciding what career you are going to pursue is the job outlook of that specific career. Why pursue a career and spend time earning an education if you’re not going to be able to find a job? According to Choices Explorer, in 2008 there were approximately 661,400 anesthesiologists in the workforce ("Anesthesiology."). The job outlook for anesthesiologists is expected to have a growth rate of twenty-one point eight percent from 2008 to 2018 ("Anesthesiology."). Due to the increasing United States population, medical professional will always be in high demand; higher population equals more doctors to meet the population’s healthcare needs ("Anesthesiologist."). Although money isn’t everything in a job, and I should really love what I do everyday, I still need to be sure that my career will be able to provide me with a quality lifestyle. The career of an anesthesiologist will do just that. Anesthesiologists make a great salary, and it is one of the reasons why I’m drawn to this specific field of medicine. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, anesthesiologists make a mean annual wage of $246,320, and the mean hourly wage is $118.42 (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.). This is a very comfortable amount, and will be helpful with the lifestyle I want to live, and on top of that paying back student loans and debt. Some of the top states that have the highest mean annual wage for anesthesiologists are places that I would like to live such as, Washington, California, Florida, and Pennsylvania (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.). This is a fabulous statistic, because I now know that I’m guaranteed a higher mean annual wage than other anesthesiologists in other states. It feels great to finally know what I need to accomplish after high school to successfully become an anesthesiologist. Interviewing an actual doctor of anesthesiology was also very eye-opening, and was helpful in finding out what the job is actually like. Although the education required to become a fully certified anesthesiologist is twelve years, and the costs of education are very expensive, I still find this career to be very valuable and worthwhile to me, and on top of that there are tons of great things about this career choice. The career choice of an anesthesiologist will provide me with a stable job because of the increasing job outlook, and the salary will provide me with a comfortable lifestyle. In addition to that, the nature of the work for anesthesiologists will always keep me on my toes, and will always provide me with something interesting to be involved with. Conducting this research was a very helpful and enriching experience for me. This project has helped me feel more stable for what is to come after life at Keystone, and is something I am anxiously
