The notion of communicative competence was first mentioned by Hymes. He invented this term to compare between a communicative view of language and Chomsky's theory of competence. Chomsky(1965) mentioned that the main concern of the linguistic theory is to define the main principles which enable speakers to formulate a good and correct sentence. On the other hand, Hymes's theory of communicative competence illustrated the things that a competent speaker have to be familiar with. Thus, he/she should not only master the second language grammar and vocabulary but also he/she should have a good knowledge of how and what to use appropriately in a specific situation. According to Hymes (1972), competence should be viewed as “the overall underlying knowledge and ability for language which the speaker-listener …show more content…
Group or pair work
Engaging learners in an interactive communication activity is one of the principle requirements of CLT (Savignon, 2002) pair work.CLT teachers involve many to pair work and group work activities in the classroom to oblige learners to use a real language. Liao(2000) illustrated that his communicative activities have to create an information gap which in turns will enable learners to communicate in the target language. As a result, learners will scaffold each other language. Thus by the help of these activities the most important notions of CLT, which is learners’ communicative competence, will be consolidated. (Ying, 2010).
However, group/pair work is not considered and should not be considered as an essential part of CLT (Savignon 2007). This comes from the fact that in certain circumstances it will be difficult or may impossible to apply this kind of activities (Gower 1983). مس
