Saturated fats, unsaturated fats, and polyunsaturated fats are used for energy because they store large amounts of it. Phospholipids are used for cell structure. Proteins are the final organic compound. They are made up of amino acids that are chained together. Since there are 20 types of amino acids, there are thousands upon thousands of types of proteins. Twelve of the amino acids are made by our bodies, but we must consume the other eight. An extremely important type of protein is called an enzyme. Enzymes speed up our bodies’ chemical reactions. The purpose of this lab was to figure out what foods contain different organic compounds. The tests were very simple, but the information found with them is very significant. Knowing what organic compounds are in the food we consume can prevent people from having allergic reactions. It can also help us know what foods we should be eating to benefit our bodies. A.)
